Yeah, I know this is a frivolous thread but for me at least it's kind of cathartic to give my Top Ten List of Celebrities that I'm sick to death of hearing about in the "news." It might be revealing for posters to compare their lists. What it reveals I won't say just yet.

Request: limit yourself to celebs who you believe are hyped and have long outworn their welcome. Tandems permitted.

TOP TEN CELEBRITIES WHOSE MERE MENTION MAKES ME CRINGE

10. David/Posh Beckham
9. Al Gore/Jimmy Carter
8. Michael Jackson
7. Simon Cowell
6. Snoop Dogg
5. Paris Hilton/Lindsey Lohan
4. Britney Spears/Pam Anderson
3. Donald Trump
2. Brangelina
1. Madonna

I gotta say, there are a few celebrities on that list that I somehow manage to avoid hearing much about at all. Sure, I know who they are, and why they're talked about, but I can't say I'm really being forced to partake in their media presence all the time.

Quote:
10. David/Posh Beckham

The only time I ever really hear about Beckham is when my students who are soccer fans bring him up. And even then, it's usually just his name that gets mentioned, not anything specific about his life.

Quote:
8. Michael Jackson

I really haven't heard much about that guy since his acquittal and susequent exile to Dubai a few years back.

Quote:
7. Simon Cowell

I've only known for the past few weeks that he's the host of a few American Idol-type shows, and I still don't even know what he looks like. It seems to me that if you avoid watching those shows, and reading news articles that mention them in the headlines, you're probably not gonna have much, if any, exposure to him.

Quote:
2. Brangelina

Believe it or not, I think of them as two separate entities, based on the movies I've seen each of them in. Yes, I'm aware that they're an "item", but couldn't tell you anything about the state of their relationship. (I don't even know if they're married or not.)

Quote:
Lindsey Lohan

I admit paying somewhat more attention to her ups and downs. I know, for example, that she was claiming to be a lesbian, but now is not, and that she showed up at Jack Nicholson's house in the middle of the night a few weeks back looking to party. But the reason I know these things is because I make a point of seeking out information on her, since I find her a capable actress and a midly intriguing personality. Which brings me to my main point...

If you find that you are hearing too much about a particular celebrity, it's probably because you are, in one way or another, looking to hear about them. Admittedly, I don't watch TV, so maybe that makes it a little easier for me to avoid unwanted celebrity incursions into my consciousness.

I watch CNN International, FoxNews, MSNBC, CNN Headline, BBC, and ABC among others and most of these manage to creep into the daily commentary somehow or another, although the BBC is the least guilty. But nice try and thanks for playing Manner of Speaking.

In no particular order:

Jim Rome
Gilbert Gottfried
Jim Carrey
Keanu Reeves
Ben Affleck
Puh Puh Puh Pokerface Puh Puh Pokerface
Susan Boyle
Amy Grant
Celine Dion
James Taylor

After Puh Puh Puh Puh Pokerface stops playing on the radio so often, Michael Bolton can retake his rightful place on the list.

Maybe stop this. Give up on tv news (commentary). All of it. Instead, read a newspaper or current affairs mag everyday (try to stick with ones you know you will disagree with). You'll calm down a great deal.

Well there you go, there's your problem right there.

"Mainstream news" isn't designed or intended to inform you. It's designed to program you. And apparently it's done an excellent job. Try these for a change:

You sound like you're proud of the fact that you've tried every recipe for mashed potatoes in the universe.

There is a whole world out there to explore, you know. You don't have to agree with everything written by these newspapers here, but goodness try expanding your horizons once in a while.

Maybe it's a little too big? It's the opening scene from one of my favorite Michael Mann movies...should I shrink it?

Nah. It doesn't bother me. And I quite like it.

No, that privilege is reserved for posters like you.

Anyway, feel free to continue a completely irrelevant conversation which manages to be more frivolous and gratuitous than the fare associated with celebs on my list.

Start off by shrinking your head instead. I have never confined myself to TV, or radio, newspaper, or online news for that matter. And it's willful to believe that all news emanating from these sources is designed to program the viewer.

But not to put too fine a point on it, you started this thread because you complained of seeing the "same" celebrities in "the news" over and over again. My observation goes to maybe you are spending too much time looking at the same "news sources" and need to look at something different and challenging for a while.

Quote:

I couldn't agree more, and its willful to try and get away from these and look at sources that don't spend a fortune trying to "segment their market" and plant cookies on your computer, etc.

Too many people in the general public confuse "good" journalists with "excessively opinonated" or obsessively status-seeking. Sometimes the best way to stay well-informed about what is going on in the world is to avoid the talking heads and the self-important editorialists altogether. They are all out to put a spin on you, for whatever personal or professional reasons. Most of them tailor their work to the lowest common denominator and either ignore the intelligent viewer/reader or assume they don't exist.

By the way, who are Simon Cowell and Snoop Dogg? I've never heard of them.

To put a blunt point on it and take a jab, I think I'm resourceful enough to find alternate sources without your guidance. But then this concern has nothing to do with the point of the thread, which was simply to share a list of your favorite usual suspects.

Now, please, continue with your avatar chat. I'm sure Paris Hilton wants to get on this discussion too.
