|
|
I recently spoke to GEPIK and they informed me that my application was rejected due to a bad reference from the principal at my last school. Frankly I was quite shocked at this because i thought I left he school on good terms. I am wondering what i should do now? If my application from GEPIK weas rejected, does that mean I will be rejected from all public school positions in Korea including SMOE and EPIK?
I am really in a bind now because my goal was to transfer from one employer to another. They already gave me my letter of release. Does it mean that if i want to work in Korea I will have to immigration and cancel my visa then go look for a hogwan position?
I already have all the documents to process a new E2 visa including a criminal record check.
I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me on this? |

I would wear a tie without suspenders to start with.
Next, go through recruiters where you would interview with the school instead of applying directly to GEPIK. I don't know why people do this to begin with. You get assigned to a school like being in the army. I would rather go to the school and talk to the principal. Then, you won't need to worry about the school "checking up" on you. |

That was the plan. I told the recruiter that I wanted to go speak with the school in person mainly because it is far faster and easier to get all the paper work, such as signing the contact and getting the acceptance letter, finished than going through the board of education. However, the recuiter told me that the board of education will take care of everything. I should not have listened to her. Perhaps she thought if I did things my way she might get her recuiting fee. |

Well, can't you just go with a different recruiter? I can't imagine a school wanting to hire you and then being rejected themselves by BOE. |

I thought about that, but i want to make sure that i have not been "black listed" from public school position. I have no idea is GEPIK or SMOE are connected.
Also, I was told that my documents have been sent back to the recuiting office. Apparently, according to the GEPIK coordinator, Dane Bae, the office does not seem very prompt in situaitons such as these. Apparently, they did not get in the mail today and I am suspecting they won't get them in the mail until Monday at least. Plus, to make matters worse, it took them over a week to actually view them and get an answer. I am guessing I won't see them again for almost another week.
Bottom line. I will never go through this route again. I hate having all my documents passed off from one person to another. I sure hope they don't get lost in the process. |

If it was not Dain Bae who rejected your application then it does not sound like you have been rejected by GEPIK per se. It sounds like the school in question decided they didn't want you and are now sending your application back to GEPIK.
Many schools hire direct, without going through the GEPIK bureaucracy. I would apply through a recruiter like ESL Planet and have them liaise between you and a GEPIK school. If your Principal is giving out bad references....are you on good terms with any of the English teachers at the previous school? Maybe you could provide their contact details as a reference instead? |

Having come from this predicament myself, I can tell you that you can continue to look for a school within GEPIK. I was denied 3 schools because of a nasty manager from my hagwon. Like another poster stated, find another person at your school who can vouch for you. |

The vindictiveness of a K who has 'lost face' by the action of one's 'leaving' knows no bounds.
Personal experience -
After two years of faithful service, I did not renew a public contract (and told the - psycho - K 'boss' I was returning to my home country). I had no intention of returning home (other than for a short holiday), but rather wanted to move to a different PS in K-land. I 'made up' (lied about) the story so he could 'save face'... otherwise, it would be no job in K-land for me.
I secured my ideal job and the told the 'boss' there had been a "change of plans" (he would find out anyway). While he was 'OK' with things in front of me and everyone else who worked there, behind my back he was frantically making phone calls to 'bad mouth'/spread lies about me to virtually everyone involved in my new employment. Luckily (not really 'lucky'... I planned it), it was too late for him to affect anything; and I've been happy in my 'new' job for almost two years now.
Last year, I needed to renew my passport and wanted my K doctor to act as guarantor. He agreed... until my old 'boss' 'got to him'... then he reneged. God only knows what the 'boss' told him! |

I don't have my co-teachers contact info on my cell phone anymore. I didn't think I would need it. Also, I deleted all of her info from my email account for the same reason. To make matters even more difficult, I recall last year that she would not be resigning with the same school.
How critical is it to have my old co-teachers contact information when applying with a new public school positon. I do have a reference letter and proof of employment that shows I worked for them. No of which said anything negative about my work ethic, and no deciplinary action was given to me, which means I have a clean work record. However given the fact the principal already put in a bad word on my name, I don't know how use they are to me. |

Well, that's life....Everything comes at a price.
But, what can you do??? Here's a little suggestion:
Quit assuming, be logical and most of all: Have some class,
go to the school ( like a responsible adult) and make amends for your mistakes
Why do foreigners always blame it the Korean boss? Geez, it has already
cost you one job. What else is gonna cost you? |

What is the OP assuming?
How has the OP not 'shown class'?
For what mistakes should the OP make amends?
What has already cost the OP a job?

I don't know about SMOE, but Epik definitely ring your old school for a reference. If the complaint is unjustified, I'd contact the Ministry of Labor. |
