Has anyone on here taken a voyage across the Pacific on a container ship like the rides they sell on www.freighterworld.com ? If so, did you like it? |

I've reaserched this a little 'cos I don't like flying, but it's far too expensive. One of their routes was across the Pacific return for $6000.
What happened to the glory days when you could stowaway or work in the kitchen to get you to the horn of Africa? :) |

Yeah, the price is the main thing putting me off from it, especially since I would probably be seasick the first couple of days since I haven't ridden on a ship before. I wish they would show photos of the "Russian stewardesses" they mention on the website. |

Well you may well be seasick for the whole voyage! Take the boat from Korea to China and test out your sea-legs. |

Ok, you and the chick at the end of the Korean Air commercial have talked me out of it. I'll be flying instead! |

I think flying's the best option, too, but you probably wouldn't have to worry about sea-sickness on a freight ship. They're so huge, you'd hardly feel the rocking unless you went through a typhoon or something. It's smaller ships that really go up and down. |

I've got to say travelling by boat is great. I've been across the Caspian and came from Vladivostok to Korea on a boat. I'll definitely be travelling to Japan and China that way as well. If it's going to be about the same price as a flight then I'm all for it, you see so much more and it's just more....elegant (?). |

I took the Busan to Long Beach in April. It cost about $1500(US) and took 15 days.
I was the only passenger but the German captain and chief engineer were both nice. The cook was Russian and the food was ok, not great. I was told this was the worst cook the ship had though.
As for seasickness, these boats do rock and/or roll. You may get queasy the first couple of days if you don't take anything for it.
The room is just like a hotel room with a tv, refrigerator and full bathroom. Movies and books are also provided and if you befriend the captain he may let you raid his ample stash of movies.
They do sell snacks and drinks 2 times a week and that includes beer.
Oh, and you can't get off the boat in Osaka or Tokyo. |
