Koreans' Body Shape Is Changing
Koreans are changing in shape from the stocky, heavy-headed warriors of yore, according to research by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards.
Compared to 1979, the length of men's faces decreased from 24.6 cm to 23.6 cm, and from 23.3 cm to 22.3 cm for women. The width also shrank, with 15 percent lower chin capacity for Koreans born after the 1970s. The shape of the head also changed, the forehead morphing from flat and narrow to more convex and wider. Overall, heads have become rounder, chins narrower, the mid-facial area longer, and cheekbones less prominent.
Body shapes are also transformed. The average height of men in their 20s is now 173.2 cm, up 6 cm from 1979. As for women, the average height is 160 cm, up 4.5 cm from 30 years ago. In 1979, men were over 10 cm shorter than Westerners, but now Korean men are just 5.3 cm and Korean women are 5.5 cm shorter than Americans.
Body proportions also changed. According to the study, both Korean men and women are now about seven heads tall. The history of Korean fashion shows men during the ancient Three Kingdoms Period were 5.9 heads tall, during the Chosun Dynasty 6.4, in 1979 6.8, and now 7.4. Women were 5.8 heads tall during the Three Kingdoms Period and are now 7.2 heads tall.

yeah yeah...
these days many Koreans are eating more healthy - so more tall people
(thats what the report focused on)
however - they neglected to mention many koreans are also eating more "junk" food - and there is an obvious amount of more FAT koreans...

Everyone focuses on diet and hormones as the reason why humans are bigger than in the past. I believe this is partly the case, but no one seems to state just plain evolution as a possible cause.
Look at the progression over time. On average, there's been a fairly steady increase in height for all humans on this rock. People are just plain bigger.
Americans have been consuming milk for over 100 years and the kids today are much bigger in general than they were say 60-80 years ago.
Enviromental factors play a huge role in evolution, but there seems to be something more than just diet and the hormones in milk at play in this phenomenon. |

weren't some people around here claiming recently that the average height for young Korean males is 5-10? and I basically called massive BS?
let's see
173 cm- a shade over 5'8 !
thank you. my eyes would concur with that statistic. |

I believe in evolution but for a change like this within 40years, it seems a little unrealistic. I think the "not having enough food" to having excess" is the biggest part for the time being. |

Is Korea the only country that cares about face sizes and proportions? |

Yeah, I'd never heard of people measuring/comparing "face" sizes before I came to Korea.
And they do take it seriously.
Perhaps the rest of the world should, too. Damn it. |

I don't understand why Korean men were compared against all western men but Korean women were compared only against Americans. What are they trying to hide? |

Whenever I try on shirts or jackets in Korea, the body is too wide, the neck is too big, and the sleeves are 2 inches too short. Never had that problem in America. (or if the neck fits, the sleeves are 4 inches short, or if the sleeves fit, the neck is 2 inches too big).
Hopefully they'll start making clothes for the new body type of Koreans. |

I have no problem with this statement other than countries who have had plenty of food and nutrition for well over 100 years. American's have been eating "high on the hog" for many years and the kids are just bigger than in the past. |

Funny how noone mentioned that the pure Korean gene pool may have gotten a bit polluted, too. Combine that with better nutrition, and you might just be on to something. Nutrition alone would not cause a change in the bone structure of the face..... |

From what I've seen, I think face/head size is kinda important to Koreans. Some Koreans have what I would think are the biggest heads I've ever seen.
Isn't that part of the stereotypical Korean image? Having a small head is seen as attractive here. |
