I've heard of friends of friends getting paid over 3 million in public schools, for doing very little work. Is this possible? How and why? I take it you'd need experience and a TEFL cert or more.
Also, what is settlement allowance?
Thanks |

My friend worked at a PS and was getting 2.6 in a weird payment scheme through the recruiter. But the school was giving his recruiter 3.2 a month, and the recruiter would pass 2.6 along to him and keep the difference. When the school got wind of this they cut out the recruiter and paid my friend 3.0... |

It's possible if you top out the payscale and get overtime. I make 2.4 as a Level 2 here in the sticks but with overtime get about 2.7. So I suppose you can make up the difference if you really wanted too. |

I believe the settlement allowance is the 300,000 KRW that EPIK gives you to settle in and to help tide you over until your first pay day on the 25th of the first month.
I would be a little suspicious of people telling you that they make 3 million plus for doing little work at a public school. One of my friends in Gyeonggi-do public schools who is a GEPIK level one NET in his school has to do daily reports on what he did for that day for his vice principal. There is a link on that same topic elsewhere on Dave's. There is no such thing as a free EFL lunch, even at a KOTESOL conference. |

I'm a level 1+ EPIK GET at 2.7/month.
I could (legally) pick up four 'after school' classes a week at 40K per 45-minute class. I don't because I value my time more than money. You do the math. |

Do you mean the Ks would make you pay for the likes of: bap, kimchi and some horrific sea food soup? |

That's max pay to my understanding. If transportation and rural allowance are included, it's 2.9 and then if you add paid OT, it's 3.0+. In my district there is no OT, but those with some years in and an ESL cert or a masters degree get 2.7. I know of only 1 such teacher as everyone else are newbies or are leaving this August due to starting last September. 1.8 to 2.2 is typical. |

I'm a level one teacher in Chungnam, but not through EPIK. I get 2.3 as my base pay and 300,000 in rural allowances. So my regular salary is 2.6 million.
I do 32 overtime classes a month at 20,000 Won a class. That's an extra 640,000 Won a month.
So that means I make 3.24 million Won a month. But I wouldn't say it's for very little work. I'm pretty tired at the end of every day.
For my new contract, I'm trying to get them to make an unofficial agreement outside of my regular contract that will see me getting paid 30,000 Won instead of 20,000 Won a class for overtime. They're entertaining it, but I'll probably have to settle for something like 25,000 instead.
My principal also wants me to teach a 40-minute class four times a week to prepare some very high level kids for a speech contest. If that goes ahead it will add another 320,000 Won to my pay. That would mean I could be making 3.56 million won a month soon.
So it is possible to make over 3 million won a month at a public school, but you have to work for it. |

If they have been here a while, have experience, and are including housing allowance, 3.0 is easily done. |

Depends on the rate for afterschool classes and how often...
Some pay the bare minimum(20k) and some pay 60,000 won a hour(rare)...some schools don't pay it at all(count them as regular hours)
I make a little over 3 mil and don't do alot of work....Under 30 hours of work a week. |

I make a little over 3 million at a ps. I'm pretty low on the base pay scale but I get quite a boost from my afterschool classes (which I would actually do for free, suckers), although I do end up with about 25 teaching hours a week usually. That feels like a lot by Friday. |

Yeah, it all depends on if you have after school classes or not. Last year, I was making 2.3 including housing for my regular classes and 6 hours of after school classes at 40,000 an hour. So, I was making 3.2 for about 25 teaching hours a week which was pretty decent. |
