My head teacher asked me to tutor her son a couple nights a week at 8pm.
She didn't mention money and I'm wondering if it's common for a senior teacher to ask this of the foreign teacher, pro-bono. She seemed a bit thrown off when I said "maybe. I'll hafta check my schedule"
That particular time is quite inconvient and I definately don't want to do it for free.

Does this happen often?

Are you on an E-2?

Then it's illegal for you to do so.

Just say "Sorry I can't. Immigration says I can only teach at my place of employment. It is illegal otherwise."

To answer your question , it happens now and then.

to the first response.
Yeah, I know its illegal, but it's common.
I just couldn't imagine asking someone to give up the middle part of an evening, twice a week, for no compensation.
I guess the main thing I was asking was do head teachers feel that, do to their position, they can ask this of someone and expect it to be done?

and to the second,
It's for her son, not her.

I know it's common...I was just offering an excuse you could use. Or if you want to do it...just not for free, then YOU should bring up the issue of money.

As for your question head teachers can not force or require you to do anything illegal/against the terms of your contract.

My old co-teacher who was my boss as well asked me to tutor her kids with some neighbors kids twice a week. There were two groups of 4 kids each that I met for an hour each (2 hours each time). They offered to pay. I knew it was illegal but I didn't want to disappoint my boss but after awhile I didn't feel right about taking her money and doing it anymore so I just told her how I felt and the tutoring stopped.
At my other school, the Korean English teacher asked me for extra help a lot and wanted me to go to her house for private lessons. She also offered to pay me but I just told her it was against the rules. Although rules are important...I think I value my personal time too much and don't want or need a second job.

She'll probably talk cash once you've confirmed you'll do it. Probably safer than some John who asks you on the street as she'll be in trouble should you get caught, so she'll be much more inclined to keep it quiet herself.

There again, maybe she hates you and it's all a cunning plan to get you deported.

Sounds like a big red flag. Do you think she will keep quiet about the situation?
