Cool, I've been looking forward to it. Have to download it when it comes out on Blue-ray HD or go to a movie theater in the city if I can't wait.
When's it coming out on DVD and Blue-ray? |

I thought it was great too.
I recommend you to go and watch it even if you're not a fan of Star Trek. I couldn't really care for the franchise but the wife and I really enjoyed this. |

It's a GREAT movie.
BTW, the good folks at imdb.com already have it as #228 of all-time and, as more people see this movie, it will rise even further.

It was pretty good, but more complicated than it needed to be. Both a reboot and radical erasing of most of "Trek Canon." How many stories from NEXT GENERATION does it erase by eliminating the Vulcan race? Or from the original series for that matter?
And Props to Spock though, for ginally gettin' some! And not just that, but both a HUMAN and a NON-WHITE! so BOTH his parents can disown him! |

I loved it! The director learned from the other prequels made and other character relaunch attempts, like the Superman Returns movie, where the director tried to follow the original so-much that there was no room for the actors to add their own spin. I felt sorry for the Brandon Routh dude being constrained to the Christopher Reeve mold like that.
Anyway, great movie and highly recommended. It was my first movie experience here. I loved it also for the selfish reason that the movie dialogue was in English and made me forget that I was in a foreign country for a few hours. |

Solid movie, decent enough sci-fi aspects.
The acting was first rate.
The action scenes were directed pretty typically though in terms of camera angles (eg., the cliff hanging was so sterotypical - nothing new there).
But while less original in cinematography than - say - the recent Star Wars movies, it doesn't overdo the blue screen animation hi-tech camera tricks that is so annoying about sci-fi films these days.
The storyline is pretty simple and basic. How anyone could call it "complicated" is beyond me. Yes there is a TWIST but once you 'get' the idea (not a new idea in the sci-fi genre) then it all falls into place pretty easily.
Not the best Star Trek movie, not even top three. But better than some clearly, a middle-of-the-road quality film that actually should appeal to the more Indiana Jones non-sci-fi audiences.
Overall, worth watching. |

Superman Returns pretty much ruined TWO franchises- Singer drops Xmen to make that turkey, and McG ruins Xmen in his place... and really, it's not like there was anything worth saving from the 70s Superman anyway....
News around the campfire is that they ARE restarting the S-man franchise with Routh still as him, but like they did with the new Hulk, you can pretty much ignore the first movie.
anyway, I did like Star Trek. Overall, though, they'd have done a better job, if like Batman and 007, they just started over COMPLETELY from scratch. To borrow a Marvel Comics idea, just set the stories on Earth-2009 instead of Earth-1966. |

I'm looking forward to viewing it in HD with stereo surround sound. Maybe view it 3 or more times. Sounds like the best science fiction in years. I know most of you are anal critics like myself where it's rare to get a good science fiction movie review. Science fiction is the genre that's been severely lacking due to it being such highly technical hard work and expensive to produce. It also carries the most financial risk of all the genres for producers, but I guess they can take a well known and established name like Star Trek and do something great with it. |

This film doesn't erase canon; it's not canon. The time travel element of the story line means that this film took place in an alternate universe from the rest of the series. In this way, I think it's more of a tribute to the original Star Trek than an "actual" Star Trek film.
The story was pretty basic, nothing too original. However, the presentation was fun and certainly worth watching. I'm (arguably) a trekkie, though I've never watched TOS. I think this film can be enjoyable for trekkies, sci-fi fans, and just regular big summer movie goers.
I'm hoping the success means we may get a new series. Perhaps a JJ Abrams series? |

I found it refreshing to have a cast where you had the impression they were all the smartest person in the room until they got together. |

Just got back. Having grown up watching re-runs of the original series in the seventies, I loved it. Thought it really brought the franchise full circle and gave it new life.
Felt like I was the only one in on the joke most of the time throughout the movie though. |

I got a big kick out of the references to older star trek. The killing of the red shirt was well done.
However...
The plot was non-existent/completely inane/full of holes. It's apparently about a galaxy destroying supernova that is stopped by a black hole, made by Spock, which then sends romulan miners (whose mining ship is improbably armed to the teeth) back in time conveniently to the day of Kirk's birth and Spock also conveniently to near the exact day Kirk takes off in the Enterprise. Kirk and Spock (and Scotty) conveniently meet in a random cave on a random, nigh-deserted planet, (seemingly in orbit around Vulcan judging from it's size in the sky), pull the deus ex-machina of suddenly being able to beam across light years onto a moving ship in time to completely subvert any semblance of command structure and save the day.
The antagonists motives are completely unclear. Why are these miners chasing the only person in the galaxy who is trying to save it? They're being awfully vengeful against someone who was not responsible for the disaster in the first place and was trying his best to stop it.
Sure star trek often has plot holes you could drive the enterprise through, this movie just didn't have a plot. It's only saving grace were the characters of young Spock and Kirk. |
