So I want something that I can use to kill the time with and I am not sure which one to buy.
I know the DS is cheaper and can do lots of cool things when modded, Isn't the same thing true of a PSP? I assume the PSP is better for watching movies but its battery life isn't as good. I was wondering if someone could tell me more and weigh in on which one they think is better to buy and why? What is the difference between the different PSPs? Where can one download games for the PSP or the Nintendo DS? How much should I be paying for a used PSP (I know what they cost 240,000 new at technomart)? Anything would really help. I can do research online but I find people's opinions

I suppose it depends on what kind of games you enjoy, and what other consoles you might have. If you're really into graphics=driven FPS, RPGs, driving games and 3D platformers, then the PSP would probably suit you.

If you're more into casual games that focus a bit more on unique gameplay and interactivity, then go with the DS.

However, I get all of my hard gaming done on the 360, and the DS is a refreshing break from the heaviness when I'm on the bus or subway or on the pot.

I have a ds with a mod chip and 8gb micro sd card. I love the games for the ds, and I have a nintendo and super nintendo emulator with just about every game ever made. If you are looking for games for either one online, most torrent sites have games, and if you type ds roms into a search engine it wont take long to find a good one. I love my DS and I havent regretted my decision to buy that over the psp, but like the previous poster said, it is about what types of games you like to play. My DS will play movies, but i dont watch them, because I play games on it. It is nice to have the capability, but for me, I would rather play games, and I love the variety and style of play for the DS!

The PSP has the specs hands down. Not even close.

The DS has the better and more eclectic software collection hands down.

Basically the PSP is almost a PS2 in your hand. The DS is something completely different. It's about the same as a N64 specs wise, but with the touch screen and its dual screens there's all sorts of games that just can't be done on the PSP.

The DS isn't physically modded in anyway. There's a chip that you insert into the machine to load stuff. Check the thread on the DS on this board.

The PSP may require firmware hacks to load games off memory cards. This has the side effect of improving the terrible loading times and increasing battery life.

It's very easy to find software online, and Yongsan will set you up with a couple of gigs worth of games to start with.

Basically if you really want a subway time killer you'll probably be better off with the DS. It's just more suited to the nature of commutes. The auto sleep mode when you shut the DS is huge. The battery will last for days like that, and it wakes instantly when you open it. No need to worry about scratching the screen since it's a clamshell as well.

If you want to watch movies and play games then choose a PSP, but a PMP or iPod would be better for movies at least. Both can do MP3s perfectly well.

In the end it all comes down to the games. What do you want to play?

Strategy, Off the Wall, platformers(Mario, Castlevania), RPG-DS
Shooting, driving, fighting- PSP.

That's about all I know.

My wife decided to buy herself a DS, so there is a chance I will buy the PSP. I am a fan of racing games and martial arts type games to be honest. I heard the PSP 3000 firmware isn't modifiable.

All systems are modifiable. It's just a question of time and money. If nothing else they could solder in a new chip.

I would probably advise against getting the PSP if you already have a DS. Playing head to head is brilliant. I borrowed a DS and played some games with my wife once. A heck of a lot of fun, especiallly the Super Marios minigames in vs mode.

I have both, and spent time and money on it. DS was fun for awhile, but it's novelty didn't last too long. It's okay if you are a casual gamer, but the modded and homebrew software are really worthless and impractical. Plus, It so hard to play stylus-style games at 7:30 AM in the crowded subway. Often I'd look like a jackass tapping the hell out of the screen. With the modded PSP, I've casually watched movies listen to mp3 and played games. PSP(modded) also has better collection of games than DS (psone + arcade emulators). The down side of PSP is the cost: expensive memory stick (need a real Sony one for fast emulation) From my experience, battery time was not an issue.

FFIV and Civilization Revolution don't exactly strike me as casual games. There's plenty of deep stuff on both platforms.

I don't see how you can go wrong here, frankly.

anyone put a decent pair of headphones on and listened to mp3s on the DS using moonshell?

I'm already using it as an e-reader and it'd be nice not to have to carry around an mp3 player as well.

Thought I would mention that the DSi has been out for a while. I haven't checked the prices that it has been selling for outside of Japan. In the next couple months it should be arriving in Korea. Better quality screen and two cameras built in. So, it may be better to buy the DS used instead of spending full price on a new one with the next version already out.
