I'm heading to Mongolia via Japan in September for a few weeks. I'd like to know if anyone is going/living there now?

How are the conditions for travel/tourists?

I'm going in early September by train from China. Just a short trip, only 4-5 days in country.

Not sure about traveling conditions. As of right now just planning on spending the arrival/departure days in Ulan Bator and then going off to one of the national parks for a couple days.

Most of the jeep tours are 6 days each. I'd definitely include the South Gobi & Lake Hovsgol. That's 12 days. I also spent about a week in Terelj NP, staying at Mirage Ger Camp near Turtle Rock. With a few days in UB, & the 39 hour train trip from UB to Irkutsk in Russia; & the 33 hour trip from Beijing to UB, that's most of the 30 day tourist visa gone. Public transport in Mongolia is virtually non existent, outside UB to Terelj NP. Aircraft might be an option to save time.

Other foreigners went to the Altai Lakes district, in the far west of the country.

Here's some pics I took:

Great pics.

I'm always interested in the people and how they look like and interact. Pics of everyday people doing everyday things would also be great.

There must be treks of riding horses for a few days too. I'm interested in that most of all. 2 weeks in country is barely enough time to really enjoy it, but with Mongolian friends to take me places (including riding) I hope to soak up the culture and learn about the people.

Great info on travel tips around Mongolia. Darhan and maybe Erdenet are also destinations to go. Gobi Desert is a must see.
