I'm looking at packages for a hotel plus rental car for 4 days and for a half decent place its looking like it will run around 600,000 but I have seen the higher end places run up around 1,500,000 for the same deal.

I know to do things in and around the island can add up as most places charge admission fees. I'd bank on at least 1,000,000 if your doing it right...nice accommodation, transportation, nice meals and drinks...

It can be surprisingly cheap if you stay away from the wedding places.

Rent a car for 100,000 to 150,000 won for the weekend (do NOT prebook rental, walk into any hotel lobby and negotiate).

New love motel downtown Seogwipo goes for 25,000 won.
Splurge on nice beachside hotel room with balcony at Hyopjae beach for 75,000 won.

If you spend a million won for a week then you were foolishly splurging or oblivious to nearby nice alternative optons. Keep your eyes open, scoff at excessive pricing and the island can be experienced without the honeymoon gouging.

Hey VanIslander,

I am glad I didn't book anything as your advice got me thinking. When did you go when you paid these prices? Also, how is transportation to and from the airport? I was thinking I would pick up the rental car there and transportation from the airport is not an issue but when you went to negotiate a lower price at a hotel how did you get to said hotel in the first place?

Thanks for the useful post.

I dunno. I took the ferry from Wando. About 25,000 won.

Someone who had gone before advised me to just walk into a hotel in Jeju-si (the downtown jeju city) and ask for a car rental, they assuming you are a guest. i did that, no idea of the name of the place, and it worked like a charm. i even got a discount because i paid cash (even though I had a credit card to charge it, they wanted cash).

Jeju Island is like any part of Korea in terms of having cheap prices if you hunt around for them. But also it's a honeymoon destination so there are exorbant high class overcharged accommodations and services.

Just go. You plan a week there so there's plenty of time for a little patient comparison shopping. Once you get a car you have all the freedom to zip around.

Enjoy!

Thanks, will definitely take some of that into consideration. I'm going the first week of August so will be pricier due to the season but think I might try my hand at negotiating a car and saving some cash there.
