I have to say, despite the hysteria over the famous flu, I have to hand it to the Koreans regarding this whole quarantine and hospitalization business.. They treated us first-class.

As some of you guys know, I was one of the piggy flu "victims" and spent time in a quarantine and then later in a high-security lockdown (after I tested positive) at a Korean Military hospital. Despite the obvious drawbacks of being H1N1(ESL) positive.. we were treated really well. Except for having to eat standard Korean military food at the hospital the treatment was competent and the staff was very nice. After all, it isn't every day that Korean Army nurses, medics and doctors are forced with dealing with sometimes cranky westerners in their facility.

We had TV (even had AFN) and the nurses would bring us "treats" such as coca-cola, cookies and stuff. While I would have loved an internet connection and access to a phone, given the situation, I was impressed with the Koreans.

Oddly, this whole experience reminded me as to why I like Korea. Of course, this situation also reminds me of why I don't like Korea (the xenophobia,) but that xenophobia has largely been as a result of silly media outlets like MBC and KBS and not specifically the medical response teams.

Anyway, I thought I'd post something positive. I am not always so gracious to our Korean hosts, so I wanted to take a chance to point out some good.

Anyway, remember your hand sanitizers! (I bought a big container for my classroom and will be requiring every student to use it upon entry to my classroom.) Stay healthy..

Now, it's time to catch up on my alcoholism.. Wink

That's an expense I'll gladly endure. Although, I'm sure the school will gladly subsidize the operation. Just think if ALL teachers in Korea would do it..
