I've been out of the loop for a while now and looking for some new tunes.
Anyone have anything to pass on from the last couple years? Genres....anything.
I'm listening to the Walkmen's "Four Provinces" now ....

Dunno if this helps but try it anyway. It will tell you similar stuff to your likes. Sorta fun.

If you can get over the pretentious writing style, pitchfork almost always has some good suggestions (and some laughably bad ones).
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com
Some relatively recent favorites:
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Why? - Alopecia
Santogold
Air France - No Way Down
Fleet Foxes |

My favorites of the last few years would be;
Arcade Fire-Neon Bible
Bon Iver-For Emma, Forever ago
Fleet Foxes-Fleet Foxes
Animal Collective- A few albums
Interpol-Our Love To Admire
The National-Boxer
Tv On The Radio-Return to Cookie Mountain and the new one.
Wolf Parade-Apologies to the Queen Mary
I would recommend checking out Pitchfork Medias best ofs. I pretty much slavishly follow their ratings and they almost never let me down. |

if you're just looking to aimlessly listen to tunes...
pandora.com or deezer.com
put in a band you know you like and it will find similar bands and play s tuff and you can weed out things you don't like and add to stuff you do like.
so it's like a radio station that doesn't suck. and it's free. and you can jam it on a mobile if your mobile is fancy enough.
may is also suggest artists:
yeasayer
the knife
andrew bird
MGMT
Beirut
pinback
sufjan stevens
also may i doubly emphasize animal collective |

I second Bon Iver, the Fleet Foxes, MGMT, Sufjan Stevens, and some of the others mentioned. Just dusted off Vampire Weekend, still sounds fresh if a little pretentious. If you're into more mellow stuff check out Bonnie "Prince" Billy, just got his discography and it's rockin my socks. But if teaching little kids makes you want to break stuff, you can should be able to find the Clutch discography, some great east coast hard rock. Here's a quick hit from Clutch's album "Blast Tyrant."
Everybody move to Canada and smoke lots of pot.
Everybody move to Canada right now. Here's how we do it:
Bum rush the border guard before he and his dog ever knew it. |

IMO, the last few years have been rather dry years in terms of outstanding releases, but of course there are some great ones.
My faves are:
Rooks by Shearwater
For Emma by Bonn Iver
Neon Bible By Arcade Fire
Besnard Lakes are Dark Horses by Besnard Lakes
Santogold
I'm sure there are others, but they escape me at this moment
I just rember one, the second to last Allejandro Escovedo release- the one with "dear head on the wall" - that's a great song
PS, I just don't get the hype surrounding The Animal Collective |

I thought they were mediocre at best until their latest release. It's much more consistent than their previous efforts. |
