I just had a couple of questions that I couldn't seem to find the answers for. I'm new to South Korea, so forgive me if these questions seem a little newb-ish:
1.) I'm aware that you get paid once a month in Korea. Is it usually at the beginning or the end of the month? I'm arriving July13th, so I'm wondering if I'll get a partial paycheck at the beginning of August or if I might have to wait longer.
2.) My contract with the school I'm teaching at will finish next July. If I decide to stay in Korea to teach, are my chances of finding a job higher because a potential employer wouldn't have to buy me a plane ticket from the USA? |

Your first question: The pay date varies depending on school but the public school are paying anywhere from the 17th of the month to the end of the month, give or take a few days. You will be paid the same day of each month unless the date happens to fall on a weekend or national holiday, in which case you should be paid the last business day preceding the pay day. Hagwons tend to pay either around the last week or the first week of the month.
Your second question: Yes and no. It depends on a lot of other things besides simply being in the country. Public and private school can make decisions based on the strangest logic, and having been here for 5 years I can tell you that what schools do doesn't always make sense. Nevertheless, good luck. |

I would arrange with the school to pay you monthly on your starting day. If you begin July 13th, then on Aug. 14th, you get a month salary. I have done this at 4/5 of the schools that I have worked for it is better than getting a pro-rated salary.
Don't worry about a second contract until you have finished your first.
Good luck. |
