So a friend of mine is stranded in Europe.

Basically she can't find a hostel in London, or any surrounding country.

They say they are booked for the next month.

How is the hostel situation in SE Asia?

I've suggested that she try backpacking there instead.

Um, I have a hard time believing every hostel bed in every European country is booked. Has she heard of hostel.com? hostelworld.com?

It may be high season but there are always places to stay, especially in Europe and SE Asia.

It is low season here in Thailand right now, most places are empty and half price.

In Europe, I was able to get cheap rooms by visiting tourist info offices in train stations or near train stations and it was Summer. 15 years ago, the cheapest were like this: Paris was like $75US, $20 Amsterdam, $50 Rome, $40 Frankfurt, but after researching recently, it is very expensive and hard to get a bed. Could be different now that internet is more involved so the beds could be fully booked and not going on a 1st come 1st serve basis like in the good ol' days.

Better to go in September than May through August.

Thailand, as far as I know, the Thai could always accommodate any number of backpackers for $3 to $10 per night. Never heard of Thailand being too full.

Actually, Thai accommodations ARE too full these days. Too full of rodents and bugs, that is. Flea-stels, bug-galows, and pest houses would be glad to have you now. Just bring some Raid, a blanket, a pillowcase, and a mattress pad. Sleeping on the floor is a possibility if you're allergic to bed bug manure.

Totally true its the start of the rainny season so not a bad time cost wise.

I like it as well because it rains once or twice a day then stops so just hole up in a little bar for 45 min watch the rain drink a beer then be off again.
