Yay. My two favorite things together; Flight of the Conchords and Korea. Better than peanut butter and chocolate.

i never thought these guys were any good when i first saw them on a nz comedy show about 7 years ago thought they were too cheesy... jermaines clement has always been a funny dude tho he was on a comedy show in nz called skitz and in the low budget kung fu comedy "the tongan ninja" and that dude bret in a funk/reggae band called the black seeds and was an extra who got screen time in lord of the rings but as a the concords i never got them until they made it in the usa...funny that
new zealand tv network rejected thier idea for this show?.... and they bounced back and got a deal with hbo!
i glad they did thier show is fuckin o for awesome
with the concords cd going platnum and new zealand samoan rapper savage going gold in the usa with the single swing(not really my kind of hip hop but congratulations to that dude as well) nz music is doing well in the usa... the only othersuccesnz has had in usa was crowded house in the 80's and omc's how bizaree in the 1990's |

How do you define success? Is it purely monetary? or is it about recognition? success with who? the sheeplike masses who need their music spoonfed to them?
Why don't you do some research - heaps of my friends are in bands playing festivals in Europe and the U.S and loving it. The Mint Chicks have moved to Portland and I think are signing with the kill rock stars record label. Die! die! die! have been playing around the country with Slint, Wolfmother and Wire, Ladyhawke was nominated for the NME best artist this year, as were the Veils a couple of years ago, The Datsuns are still going strong, The Checks were mentioned as an upcoming band in Spin earlier this year, the Fanatics are about to embarck on a European tour..
I am not saying these are bands that have had commercial success, but there is shitloads more good innovative music coming out of NZ than some fucking wannabe gangster samoan rapper. Southside of Apia?
I mean good on him for doing his thing, but it is embarrassing to say NZ music is doing well in the US based on a comedy folk duo and a Samoan rapper..and that the the most successful NZ musician in the 90's was a one hit wonder! They represent .01% of what NZ music is about now. It's like saying Bryan Adams and Celine Dion are doing well in America so Canadian music is doing well. And they represent what Canadian music is about. Thank god I discovered Wolf Parade, death from above 1979, of Montreal etc or I would have thought Canadian music sucked!
And also..who gives a *beep* if they are doing well in the US? can you only be talented and successful and talked about if you have had success in the US?
It's this cringworthy kiwi attitude which makes me embarrassed to go home.
How many NZer's would like FOTC if it hadn't been successful overseas? |

read my post again buddy i agree with a lot of what your saying but with the concords i just didnt think they were funny until i saw the hbo show!
as for savage it's an imitation of US hip hop with little originality but to be honest it's better than a lot of the shitty modern commercial US hip hop so thats not saying much! but good on him for his succes in the US which is a market thats hard break into.
dam native's KDRU album was and still is the best nz hip hop an they are unkown outside nz. trinity roots is one of may favorite nz groups and thier largely unkown outside nz and for left field rock bressacreatincake was awesome. i like the mint chicks song crazy but not dumb its a good song i freaked out when i heard them playing it in what the book in itaewon.
nz is one of the few english speaking countries that has yet to be a major force in world music. when other small english speaking countries like jamaica an ireland have had internationally known artist for decades...but i think our time is coming |

Yeah, Savage is good. Dam Native have been around for years!
I am not too worried about worldwide domination in the music scene. There are plenty of middle of the road acts throughout the world and they tend to be the ones that become really big. I like bands that aren't afraid to do their own thing - commercial success be damned. There is nothing worse than a band with a 'plan.'
Look at Shihad. They jumped on every bandwagon that came along and it was so clearly contrived and fake then someone like FOTC comes along playing their ditties and are really successful!
I think it's good that there are so many NZ underground and indie bands around. I would hate to be a nation of Bon Jovi's. I just wish more NZer's understood that there is good non commercial music out there. |

savage isnt very good but pop/commercial hip hop these days is even worse remember those hook it up cellphone commercials they made? he had to make it in the US he was dead in nz! and was fading in australia as well.
we are a small country so we need some kind of international recognition i'm glad we had crowded house an omc in the past youve got to admit for pop music there way better than having byran adams an celine dion!
i hear what your saying about jumping on the bandwagon when someones recognized internationally but in the case of the concords i just didnt think they were funny years ago but maybe thats part of our problem we judge people to harshly when thier talents still being formed an because it's a small place it's hard to come back from that.
i think that another problem is we lack original genres in nz most people make music along the lines of foriegn genres rock, reggae, drum n bass, hip hop etc even if we give our own flavour or sub genre like the low fi dunedin rock sound of flying nun in the 80's or wellington dub reggae of more recent times we need our own style
concords are mad original who would have thought a folk comdey duo would be nz music's most popular music export to date.... even if im a late comer to the bandwagon i like thier show an cd |

This show is consistently rad.
The new one after, Eastbound and Down, is even funnier. HBO has some of the best comedies on TV (see: Curb Your Enthusiasm). |

I liked FOTC before I even saw them . My dear old dad sent me a FOTC tape that he recorded off National Radio - in early 2003 if I remember correctly - and I thought they were pretty cool.
Then in recent years they got all popular with hip, liberal New Englanders and other yanks and I'm afraid to say a bit of the kiwi tall-poppy syndrome started to affect my thinking.
Then I thought to myself, hey I can capitalise on this, so I'm in the process of growing a beard and booking a ticket to New York. Once there I plan to spend a lot of time hanging out in quiet bars, looking a bit awkward and making slightly off beat comments about various things of interest to me.
Should I bring my cat? |
