I'm headed to Thailand on Friday, and I'm told that one can rent a cabin on the beach for a very small amount of money there.

I'm wondering if anyone has any information about this.

Thanks in advance...

It really depends on where in Thailand you are going. As you mentioned beach it will be south of BAngkok, but it is still high season and in places like Phuket it is enough of a challenge to find a cabin or bungalow on the beach period. I lived in Phuket for a couple of years so I could give you some good ideas of where to start looking, but are you flying into Samui or Phuket or is that still open?

I haven't booked a flight yet, but I'll probably fly into Bangkok as I'm going for a visa.

Ok, I got my visa in Bangkok as well, it took a whole day though, or at least overnight, If you are only down there a few days for the visa that would restrict you on the more tranquil places, how much time have you got?

I'm just going for a C-3 (tourist) visa, I'm not sure if that takes as long. Either way, I'm planning on staying about a week or so, maybe more depending on how cheaply I can live.

If budget is a major issue it won't be the optimum time to be there, but a bargain can always be had in Thailand at any point, just takes being a little more selective. Flying down to a point in the South like Phuket, Krabi or even Trang can increase your options quite a bit. If that is not in your budget you can do the overnight bus, it's a long haul so I've never been inclined to save the money, but the train can also be good and it does go to Trang.

Ther's always sticking close to Bangkok but then you're looking more at beach time than a relaxing time.

I never came across any, however I was on a beach in Krabi and it was a relatively popular area and at the end when I walked down there were a few people in the buck, so the Thais don't seem to care, toplessness is rampant, but I have never seen a beach where nudity was the rule. Probably exists somewhere though, post it if you find something.

Nudity was around.. but not mandatory. Little is mandatory in Thailand.

as for cheap "bungalos" well your coming out of hte peak season right now. If you head down to the islands in the south east(koh Samui, Koh tao, Koh phanyang) they are usually cheaper. On the other side (koh phi phi) I find it to be more expensive

it often depends on how close to the beach you are.. and if your willing to share with ppl (i shaked up with two amazing OZ med students).

either way expect anything between 5000won to 40 000won per day. If you dont take AC or private WC it'll be cheaper.

I was wondering the same thing.
I'm sure there are plenty of guys out there on the Thai beaches *wanting* to look like my guy...but unfortunately, they are all overweight ESL teachers.

Pity.

TECO asked:

I am not as sure with Samui but the peak high season is done in Phuket but it is still considered to be the shoulder high season until the Songkran festival in April. Samui's low season begins around the same time as Phuket's, they may get less rain at the time but not as many people are looking for sun obviously at that time of year. Great time to be travelling in that region fo bargains.
