So I minored in TESOL in college and received my TESOL Certificate, but supposedly it's pointless because I only took 18 credit hours worth of TESOL courses when 100 hours is needed.

So my question is: Is my TESOL cert. useless? And is 18 credit hours different than 100 hours? 100 credit hours would be near a B.A. (124 to be exact) and I don't think it is necessary to have that to be TESOL certified.

Any explanation on this would be great because I now feel like I just wasted 2 1/2 years (5 semesters) on my TESOL courses Sad

The 100 hours refers to study hours, not credit hours. Your 18 credit hours are semester hours I presume. As such the amount of actual study time would be more than sufficient in your case. Don't sweat it, you should be good to go.

BTW, congratulations on making the decision to get extensive training in this area at university. I am sure it will benefit you a great deal.

I did the same thing myself. I posted once about it asking a similar question. I haven't actually worked in a public school, so I don't know how well it would be received. I am kind of curious.

However, it will be just fine to have that certificate in other countries like Thailand where you are required to have one.

I think I read somewhere it needs to state the course hours on the certificate.

I'm sure they want to see 100 or 120 because there are 60 and 80 hour courses out there.

Maybe ask your uni department for a letter stating the fact?

Thanks for the input guys. I'll try to get it straight before signing my contract. Because of this, they gave me the lowest contract but I feel like I should at least get a little more than what their giving.
