Interesting.
I remember when Tiffany and some other talentless teenyboppers made it purely on packaging--while it lasted. That was a LONG time ago.
Can a group of Asian women parading as teenagers appeal to 11 year old Americans? How do they think this is actually going to work? Do the Koreans think that Korean blind admiration for America is somehow going to be returned?
Or have I been out of the states too long?
I feel sorry for the girls, being paraded around. I imagine them hitting the soju coctails after each concert to try to make it all go away. In a worst case scenario they do find a following, but it's all 30 something men with yellow fever, going to concerts and then whacking off afterwards in the venue parking lot, and occassionally getting up the nerve to yell, "You, B****, you and me, tonight!" from the crowd. Could get ugly.
I wonder how they will look back on this when they are older? Maybe they'll talk about how fun it was--that attempt at world fame. I more imagine they will feel that queezy feeling that you get when you think about something really really embarrassing that you did long ago and can never undo. Those actions that you very quickly put out of your mind because even you can't face them. |

I don't understand what you're saying. Why wouldn't Asian women appeal to Americans? Does this include Hispanic and black Americans? Unless you're referring to white Americans. Because I'm sure Asian Americans would be ecstatic. |

they'll be touring the with the Jonas Brothers so I am sure their concerts will be chock full of the 9-12 preteen set.
Of course, this exposes what really is their 'target audience", yet in Korea, it's amazingly older. Of course, in Korea, you have 30 year old "women" with full Hello Kitty collections
I'm pretty sure their race won't have anything to do with their appeal, and or lack of it.
though the line of women parading as teenagers in order to appeal to 11 year olds is pretty much true.. and kind of "interesting", don't you think?
the prepackaging thing might still work with pre-teens. After all, the Jonas Bros, and Miley Cirus, what is that? The problem will then become how do you package the Wondergirls and how will race affect that packaging for an "American" audience?
on terms of music alone, they're bound to bomb, as Boa will soon find out. Americans over 12 years old just don't get into what they're playing/singing. |

This may sound weird but I wish them all the best.
I don't have high hopes for them because Rain and Seven and so on have tried and failed before.
However it's about time the West got some hot Asian girl pop action. The Asian chickeys have been sorely under-represented and unpopular in the past and it's about time they did well. God knows who is in charge of marketing and how they will try and 'sell' these poor girls in the 'States, but I hope they've hired someone with brains and some knowledge of the local market.
I believe the group has at least one native speaking American and a few more who can speak English reasonably well, so they may have a chance. It's about time a group from Korea or Japan or China or wherever broke through. I reckon a remix of a couple of popular Wondergirls songs would actually go down pretty well in the US. They have the catchy numbers and learnable dance moves which might appeal to the tween crowd.
Good luck Wondergirls, or Sonya Shidae or whichever group finally makes it out West. |

I'm gonna assume that those that post here are late 20's, 30's and beyond.
the fact you pay ANY attention to a Korean teeny-bop group is worrisome.
As for the Wondergirls in the states, they will tap the local Korean-American kids, and that's about it. Korean music is corny and the Wondergirls will help reinforce that.

If you look at the Korean entertainment companies (JYP, SM Entertainment, etc..) you see a trend in getting more Native english speaking singers. Everyone say Rain and Se7en's failure. Their biggest problem is that couldn't speak English fluently. In America, you better speak English fluently or else you aren't going to make it in the Entertainment Industry (unless you are a super hot model).
So, Korean companies are taking gyopos and plugging them in. Tiffany, Jessica of Girl's Generation. Nicole from Kara. 2PM. EPIK High. and so on.
The Wondergirls don't have a fluent English speaker though, so I am skeptical of their chances of success.
Why do you need a fluent English speaker? Entertainment is all about the press. You don't get any press, if you can't speak English to do interviews, appearances, and network with other established singers.
Unless the Wondergirls can say something other than "Hi, my name is Subin, Nice to meet you, and you?" then they are going to fail.
I can see a popular Asian pop group in the USA in the near future. Why not? I'm not saying an Asian group is going to take the US by storm and be the biggest thing since sliced bread.
Like when BoA came to the US, a lot if people on here mocked her and the audacity of a Korean Enertainment company to be so naive as to think she would be number 1 in the US.
The goal of these Korean singers are NOT to be #1 in the US. I'm sure they would dream and wish to be number 1, HOWEVER, they know the reality of the situation.
A Korean entertainment company is just like any other business that wants to enter a foreign market. You start by getting a presence in the country, and then from there you expand. |

Many people on this board teach kids, so these groups often come up in conversation. It's an easy topic that can even get shy, unconfident kids talking.
In one breath you say paying "ANY attention is worrisome". And in the next breath you say:

LOL at the whole lotta hate goin' on -- did y'all fail the auditions for NKOTB back in '89 and you're still bitter at some 20 year-old Korean girl's semi-success?
Considering the destitute position of the American record industry over here, ANYTHING and anyone that attempts even the slightest grab at fame, no matter how much of a failure, is a success in my book. |

No the biggest problemS are......
1. Nobdy in the U.S. really cares about Korean pop.
2. I have yet to see this popies actually play an instrument.
3. Noboby in the U.S. really cares about Korean pop.
4. The U.S. already has enough crappy pop stars to look at.
5. Korean pop is all the same...same set...same dance moves, etc (that
is the basic formula, I guess...for any boy/girl band).
6. Nobody in the U.S. really cares about Korean pop.

Not necessarily. Case in point: the Buenevista Social Club can sell out places without a Cuban or Latino anywhere in sight in the US.
What's their non-English speaking secret to success outside Cuba? Talent. |
