Hey everyone. Just wondering if anyone can suggest a place to watch traditional Korean music being performed live. I actually quite like the traditional drums, the stringed instrument thingy, and flute-thingy... very cool. Where can I see a good one with all that? Any suggestions? |

I think you need to tell us where you live. There are tradish music orchestras in almost every mid and large sized city, plus variety shows and even solo recitals. A huge number of these are free or under 10,000 won as they're subsidized.
I find your description of the insturments a bit vague.
Janggu- hourglass drum
Buk - barrel drum
Most Common Stringed Instruments:
Gayageum- 12 stringed zither (also comes in 17, 21 and 25 versions)
Gomungeo- 6 string, struck with a stick
Most Common flute:
Daegeum - large transverse bamboo flute with a vibrating membrane |

If you live in Seoul the National Center for Traditional Performing Arts usually has cheap or free concerts every weekend. Their website is at: http://www.ncktpa.go.kr/eng/index_eng.jsp
Also, if you call the Korean National Tourist Organization at 1330, and tell the English operator what you are looking for, they can usually search around to see what is happening locally and get back to you. |
