I'm not good at keeping track of my bank book so I just noticed this weekend that last month my check was almost 150,000 short. I went and talked to the administration and they told me it was one-time insurance in case of unemployment and that is was not optional and everyone in country must pay it once a year.

I've never heard of this. My boyfriend also works public school and didn't have this deduction. Can someone else vouch for it? It was 145,000 taken from my April paycheck.

If you're on an E-2 visa, they shouldn't be deducting unemployment insurance premiums - you can never collect benefits. Get you money back!

You should also ask your boss to use a more up-to-date method of payment. Most bosses these days use bank transfers, I believe, not cheques.

Yeah it is a bank transfer. You have nothing helpful to say?

How do I do this? I already talked to the administration and they insisted I HAD to pay it. What evidence can I give them showing that I don't need to pay this? My Google searches aren't giving me anything.

I don't know if it's the same thing.. but I get 2k deducted each month for unemployment/retirement. Mine is only 2k though.. I called the office, I don't remember what office or the number .... maybe pension or insurance... but they said it was required. I did get another like 50k deducted a few months ago for something else though. My handler didn't know how to explain it and just said that she had the same deduction so it was "ok" ..

Your boss is incorrect. Contact SMOE/EPIK/GEPIK whoever is your supporting organization. Explain you situation. Ask them to speak to your employer. Try and keep it civil. 150,000 is not a lot in the grand scheme don't get angry just calmly get it corrected.

If it's pension you have to pay, it's unemployment you don't.

When I came to K-land, I was in the first group of foreigners for the local school district. They deducted UI premiums from our first pay (W14,000) and when I saw my payslip, I questioned the deduction. Next month, they gave the money back and never deducted it again.

The 2k wasn't pension.. that would be one low pension payment if it were.... So what can you do when you call them and they say you do have to pay it?

If it's only W2,000 it's probably some sort of local resident tax. Where do you live?

It's a mistake!

First I talked to my ct. Who talked to admin. Who swore up and down they did the right thing and followed the instructions of some GET manual.

But I sent an email to the EPIK coordinator anyways.

The EPIK coordinator for Busan said it IS a mistake, called my school, and I should be getting a refund.

The admin said they called many other schools and they were all taking this unemployment insurance. I guess if you've had it taken out of your pay, contact the local coordinator. They should set them straight.

I'm glad I checked with all of you. Thanks!
