When applying for a university job, what kind of letter of recommendation would be considered a "strong" or "great" reference?
Or, in your opinion, are all references the same as long as you have some? |

In my opinion, one that's not written only in English on a cocktail napkin. |

So you mean I should try to get a recommendation letter written in Korean?
Hmmm, I just asked for a letter.
Does it matter? |

Yes - 'A', 'E', 'I', 'O' and you are vowels. |

I think a letter from your previous academic adviser for your graduate degree, is often a good reference. Also, any place where you did some serious teaching such as another university, an international school, or a SAT prep hagwon would all be good places to obtain a strong reference letter.

Konglishman,
Thanks, that helps.
What if I work in other departments at my university? Will it be helpful to get reference letters from those departments as well?
What I mean is...
Will a professor reference from a different department/college be helpful? |

I could make the English version so full of mistakes and bizarre platitudes that no K on a university hiring committee would ever suspect it was ever written by a 'non-Han'. |

Konglishman,
Also, an academic reference is easy because my previous professors knew me.
However, current professors don't actually monitor my classes? They don't watch me teach.
My actual director knows less about my work than the people in the "other" departments that I work for.
I'm just not sure if that's normal or not. If it's normal, then I'll guess that it doesn't matter what department the person is from who provides my reference. |

Well, I personally think such a letter of reference would be highly weighted. For example, I once heard a story about someone, fresh out of undergraduate school, who got a job as a lab technician at Harvard. After working there for a year, he got a letter of recommendation from a professor and got admitted into a Ph.D program at Harvard. |
