|
|
With the new lunar year underway, the next holiday of note is three weeks away. I want to spend some prep time to do something special (rather than minimal).
What have you done, heard of, or are thinking of doing?
Getting the students to make English cards for their mothers? What? |

| Last year I made my students make cards for me. It's fun, and you always get some interesting results. (One of my middle-school boys wrote "Happy Valentine's Day" in very neat printing across the front, then drew a black, leering skeleton underneath.) The more adventurous ones will actually compose a mini-letter or write at least a few lines. So it's not wasted time unless they really hate you and absolutely loathe doing anything creative, which is rarely the case. Just pass out some A4 paper and show them how to fold it in half or in quarters (if they're littlies they don't know how) and then let 'em use their own supplies to go to town. There's lots of other craft ideas you could get off the net if you google the topic. |

| They do things a little differently in Korea. Have you heard about White Day? |

Oh, yes. Koreans have Valentine's day, then White day and then Black day.
Valentine's day - 14th of February
White day - 14th of March
Black day- 14th of April...
I am not so sure about the dates, but I think it is correct.
Valentines day is very similar as western, White day is for couples, similar as Valentines day, and the Black day is for lonely hearts... |

| Here's a site that I often use for holiday related stuff and they have a Valentines Day section for those of you teaching young learners. |

Valentines Day- girls give guys chocolate
White Day- guys give girls candy
Black Day- if you're a loser you go to a Chinese restaurant and order JJajamyun and try to hook up with losers of the opposite sex (who also happen to be eating jjajamyun). |

Well, Valentine's Day is only six days away, so I'll have to make an entire week of it for classes I have only once on Monday or Tues, etc.
After they review what the day is like in my country versus theirs, and play word games for the fun of it ("heart", "kiss", "secret"), the younger students will make cards, do a puzzle, and sing a song. (Thanks Waterbaby for the link)
The older students will just play competitive team word games for chocolate. |

"Loser" is so harsh. I have 6 days left to find a woman so I can get some chocolate. |

I'm not even acknowledging Valentine's Day... grrr
Actually, what's kinda weird is that with the girls I've dated ranging back through college and high school, I have never once had a girlfriend on Valentine's Day. |
