It's that time o' year again, the end of the year! Finals are coming up, and we have about 4 weeks left. Now, provided you do the smart thing, and show a movie after finals, that literally leaves us with 2-3 weeks left of teaching.

They will get harder and harder to teach as the semester comes to end, so here's the question: Any canned lessons? I did "The Curse of Mr. Bean" this week in all my classes, hearning that a friend of mine had had some success in a middle school. Not sure if it would still be funny for tekkie hs students, I gave it a shot, and they LOVED it! Edited a question sheet found on eslprintables.com, waste about 15-20 mintues of class before the show starts (video is about 25 min), and theres an easy lesson thats not such a movie cop-out. There's also a "lost at sea" lesson I've been doing with moderate success for low-low level hs students, found here:http://www.training-manager.co.uk/documents/TMSS-LostatSeaExercise.pdf. Anyone got anything else?
Cheers-
Gregorio

Why not show the EFL made version of Wallace and Grommit? They'll love it and student materials are there. It's available on EFL Classroom

We also have a full page of just Mr. Bean videos for use and play in the classroom.......they work too.

So middle and high schools let out earlier than elementary schools? My elementary school lets out on July 24th, then we have a 1 week English camp during the last week of July, and then I can take the 1st 2 weeks of August off to do whatever I want.

I remember reading an idea on your website about showing Mr bean to half the class and getting them to describe it to the other half. I got one lot to describe, and the others had to draw a 6 frame comic strip. I showed them Mr Bean getting his swimming trunks on at the beach and the sketch where the kid throws up on the plane and Mr Bean bursts the bag. Worked like a charm.

There is something quite funny about middle school students trying to describe how Mr Bean takes off his trousers.

I do that Wallace and Gromit lesson with my 3rd grade girls every 3rd week. They have to work hard at the lame 3rd grade text book for 2 weeks and get W&G the 3rd week. It's way too easy for most of them but they get a kcik out of it and it looks like they're working. Plus, it keeps them focused the other two weeks.

Thanks for putting that up DD.

Damn man. Coming up to the the end of my 2nd contract and I can't believe I forgot about Wallace & Gromit. All those hours of prepping and trying to find that killer activity when I could have just pulled a bit of Aardman animation out. For those that have enjoyed classroom success with W&G, you should check out Creature Comforts as well. There's plenty on YouTube to choose from.

I'll have to check that stuff out. Thanks for the input.

It's the end of my first contract here in ROK, and I can't believe it's past so quickly. I don't think I'm re-signing, but I can say that after working a full year, I think a second year would be much, much easier.

I don't have a full lesson plan to post, but I've had a lot of success with highschool girls and showing Pixar short films from youtube - there's 5 or 6 on there, about 3-6 minutes each, and very little language in them. Really good for lessons involving "what happened?" and discussing characters.

But its just the middle of the school year.

Kids in my middle school will keep plowing through the textbook with their K-teachers after the exams. I wont alter the style of my conversation classes.

Business as usual.

My main methodology these days is to get my rowdy technical high students singing elementary level animated songs (as found on www.wearebusybeavers.com) then doing karaoke songs from the High School Musical series before watching High School Musical 1 through 3.

(Add to that a couple elaborate lesson plans highlighting useful conversations for presentation class purposes ...)
