| I know that there's the electronic district in Seoul (Yongsan), but I was wondering if there was some sort of geeky cultural nexus that's like Akihabara in Korea. |

| There are "artsy" areas, like Hongdae and Hyehwa. Not sure about geeky. Although a lot of Koreans like anime and reading manga, they aren't too big on otaku activities like Maid Cafe's, or stores filled with Plamo and figurines. |

Yongsan electronics mart has Technomart (and several others) as someone has mentioned ... and it's is okay for some things. There are several buildings full of hundreds of stalls. One building has computers, the other stereo equipment, etc.
There is also an electronics mart in the new Yongsan shopping mall, though everyone tells me their stuff is overpriced.
It's fun to browse these areas like Akihabara.. but I never got any sort of a "good deal" at any of these Technomart/electronics mart except for random parts like a Korean plug into my computer.
Also nobody speaks English so have fun bargaining down.
Everything is way cheaper back home, on the internet or in China (which is where they get everything anyway).
At the computer mart the Korean branded products (LG Samsung) are overpriced or equally priced compared to a Best Buy back home as well, due to lack of competition and nationalism (Koreans will pay more for a Korean brand than a Chinese one)
Also where are the french maids who massage your legs? Seoul government needs to bring in some doumi's to make this place more appealing. |

If you're just looking for electronics, then yes, Yongsan or Technomart will be the places to go.
If you're looking for the geek-culture of Akihabara, then no, Korea has nothing like it. |

What about the smell?
Some places in Akihabara (*cough*Super Potato*cough*) are ripe with otaku who either don't shower, or don't shower often.
I miss Akihabara... home to the best ramen I had in all of Japan (for those currently in Japan, after getting off Yamanote at the Electric Town exit, walk towards Yodobashi instead of the main area. There's a mall, forgot what it's called, with an amazing ramen restaurant--Kouryu). |

Korea is nothing like Japan.
if u want places like Akihabara or Ropongi, best just go to japan.
yes korea has manga and anima but nothing on the level as japan. what stuff they do have looks like a sad rip off or copy of japanese stuff. plus, the more edgy stuff u can find in akihabara (barely covered models, border line sex acts in the street, sexy cafe's maid or otherwise) pretty much dont exist. if u do find a sexy cafe, it probably has middle aged ajumma's working in it with kim chi breath. this is sexy enough for the adjushi's that go there as thats who its meant for. not a young foreigners like u and me.
god i cant wait to leave here and go to tokyo. i may settle down for life there |

I dunno--I like Akihabara and Ropongi as ideas, but the fact that Japanese culture is so screwed up that it produces otaku makes me think twice about being there. That level of alienation, stigmatization, and hopelessness baffles me as much as it saddens me. Yes, Korea has its problems, but they're the problems of a developing country, not a developed nation with no heart. |

| Akihabara has lot's of good eateries for single men (of which I am one). It's a pretty fun place to hang out actually. |
