I need some opinions from those of you currently living in SK (especially in or around Seoul). My husband and I have been planning on coming over to teach from the States late this summer, but with all that has been going on in the North, most of our family and friends are very strongly disagreeing with us going. Do you truly feel safe there with the current tensions? I know that many Koreans feel that the North is bluffing, but nobody thought that the North would attack in '51 either, and we all know how that ended. Would you suggest us still come or maybe wait it out a year to see what happens?

The North attacked in '50. By '51 everyone expected more attacks.

As for me, I feel fine living here, and have confidence in SK's ability to defend itself, but then I'm not from 'The home of the brave' like you are.

Great. You'll find it easy to live here, though some cultural and linguistic bumps in the road.

Incredibly safe. I have never felt more safe than I do in Korea. You will too. There is no tension on the streets, no threats or sense of danger. It's a very safe country. Even Americans say they feel safer here than back home in terms of day to day living.

Worrying about CNN reports of posturing by North Korea is silly, as you will see once you're here. There is a real disconnect between the North's efforts to get international aid through cowboy diplomacy and South Korea's business as usual, work ethic mentality.

Wait it out a year??? one could have said that a year or two ago, or five. seriously, what would you be waiting for?

You really got to decide what the two of you think VERSUS the fear mongering of your relatives. If you YOURSELVES buy the it's-too-dangerous argument then don't come; but if you want the blessing and support of your family then resign yourself to the fact that it won't come any time soon and just lump it, smile and pack your bags and come.

Good luck whatever.

I still would pay money to see YBS express his sarcasm to a real live human being.

YBS was pleasantly sarcastic and witty to this real live human being.

I would say his responses to threads on this board are the same style as his real-life ones were during the long mini-bus ride on which we happened to meet.

I can believe it. A canadian going anywhere without an approved maple leaf backpack is like a Korean leaving without their Shin Ramyeon boxes and Kimchi....

Or an American going somewhere without their ego.
