In Australia, "South Korean Refugees" are applying for asylum on the basis that they are refugees escaping persecution.

Some Actually got it!

Maybe they were middle and high school students doing exchanges in Australia who, after finding out how school works in normal countries, couldn't bear the thought of returning to the conditions they left.

even tho it states they were from S. Korea, couldn't they have actually been from NK? after having fled S.K.? that is, I've heard - and it's been discussed on this board as well - that when NK refugees do settle here in SK, they are not allowed to discuss conditions up north, or even work to better improve those conditions and/or relations. they are, for lack of a better term, persecuted for speaking out. it's supposed to be some kind of dirty secret of SK's that they treat the refugees this way.

at any rate, I would think whatever reason these individuals had for applying for status this might have something to do with it; another reason could be mixed heritage that created intolerable conditions due to dark skin, or other such racial features that again, were deemed unacceptable here and created intolerable conditions.

we all know how xenophobic this country is - is it a great leap to imagine a situation where some would be persecuted to the point of requesting asylum? K has already got to be one of the most widely immigrated-from countries in the world already - isn't it? and if it's so great here - why are so many people trying to get out?
