|

Many native English teachers have been in Korea for 5 or 10 years, but few have been here as long as Thomas. Way back in 1984, Thomas began his teaching career at a private high school in Kyungju. Listen as Thomas talks about his experiences as one of the few foreign teachers in Korea at that time. Learn about his homestay experience, how he met his wife, how their bi-racial son was treated in school, and much more!

My 2nd interview over Skype -- sure was fun! He's got an incredible voice. You can't notice it as well given that it's over Skype with a small computer mic, but wow... he should be the DJ.
I replaced the yuntan photo with a wedding photo of Thomas and his wife. They look great!

That was really a great podcast. It is so interesting to learn information from those that have lived here in Korea for sometime. Thomas should write a book about his life in Korea from 1984, it would surely be a good read for those thinking about living in Korea and learn more about their history. |

I had a fun time doing it--I appreciate being asked! Also, thanks for the compliments I have a lecture hall voice, which my wife and others occasionally have to remind me to tone down in smaller spaces... The photo is one of the few without those pesky attendants. |

Yeah, I probably should write it all down sometime. Maybe I'll do like I do with my dad (regarding his WWII memories) and keep a digital recorder nearby to get down the anecdotes and other memories. |

I found this really interesting, especially in relation to Bluelake's son's language development and education. The discussion about ondol was interesting too. I think it's refreshing to hear from someone who has been here so long and is still cool about Korea and Koreans.
I agree, Bluelake's voice is easy on the ears.
Thanks Bluelake and Bassexpander. |

We all have our own road to travel. Bluelake is on an interesting one, for sure.
Also, good luck to Bluelake's son. Looks like now and in years to come he'll have some interesting stories of his own. |

Simply fabulous. I was imagining the dirt roads and life in 1984 Korea as he was speaking. |
