I found this coming across a blog post earlier. As the blogger stated this is coming from the United Nations Human Rights Council and not the Onion.

In the discussion on Cuba, speakers said Cuba had withstood many tests, and continued to uphold the principles of objectivity, impartiality and independence in pursuance of the realisation of human rights. Cuba was and remained a good example of the respect for human rights, including economic, social and cultural rights. The Universal Periodic Review of Cuba clearly reflected the progress made by Cuba and the Cuban people in the protection and promotion of human rights, and showed the constructive and responsive answer of Cuba to the situation of human rights. Cuba was the victim of an unjust embargo, but despite this obstacle, it was very active in the field of human rights. The trade, financial and economic blockade (embargo, not a blockade) by the United States should be brought to an end, as it was the primary obstacle for the full development of Cuba. |
Italics mine.
Cuba? Dear lord, why does our government even cut checks for the UN? |

The world according to the UN: The United States and Israel violate human rights. All others appear on the record only either as America's proxies or America and/or Israel's victims. |

The only real right there is economic, and Cuba doesn't have legal private property so.. Owning your labour would seem pretty fundamental to me. Cultural and social rights are academic talk.. Meaningless platitudes.
Cuba is a zoo for leftist third world fetishists. |

Yeah, well if you don't own your labor, you don't own your life. In effect, you are a slave of the state. Anyways, it's how human rights are defined, or lack thereof that makes me so skeptical. All of these HRC's popping up throughout NA, the UN and the wider world. What do they do exactly? How do people define Human Rights? It always seems to be a moving target.
I'll fight for and defend individual rights, but I'm going to need more clarification on human rights. |
