TPB has been bought out by "Global Gaming Factory x" for 60 million SEK, about 8 million dollars. 30 million in cash and 30 million in shares. About the same amount in cash as they were fined..

TPB tracks a large percentage of public torrents and has now gone the way of napster. While they profess nothing will change, that's unlikely. I read that GGFX (whoever the *beep* they are) has also bought out some P2P software developers. The rumour is they want to create a Paying P2P service similar to steam.

Sad day for file sharing, a lot of torrents will vanish and it could take a long time for their content to reappear on the internet. Between demonoid and what.cd my needs should still be served but it was nice to have a one stop shop for most the things I wanted.

This will most likely evolve into a thread for and against piracy kept fuelled by the selfrighteous contingent of American Mac owners on these boards. I for one am a little sad, but it's funny that all the RIAA had to do to close down TPB was to buy them out instead of wasting millions on lawyers and advertising.

There are plenty of torrent distributors out there.

I never used TPB.

TPB was a very large tracker, as much as 80% of the public torrents on the internet are tracked from there. It's the place where most of your torrents were from. Mininova is just a website that indexes torrents, like most torrent websites it is basically just a search engine. You guys are confused between a place that tracks torrents and a website that just lists torrents hosted elsewhere.

*sigh* I always use TPB. Maybe it's back to Usenet for me.

Anyone else download DCP packs?

Mininova doesn't host torrents? I thought it did. My mistake.

So, Piratebay hosts. Mininova tracks. Torrentz searchs. Correct?

The torrent sites 'host' or store the tracker files on their server, but they don't actually host the movies and music. We do.

I hope that we see more movement to the future ideal situation where the creative people in movies, TV, music and software, all the stuff that people download, sell their products from their websites.

Radiohead seemed to have a lot of success doing that a while back. Great idea.

I want my money to go to the musicians I like. Not some Sony executive.

I agree, but one has to like non-corporate art in the first place for that to work. Which can be hard to do. There are independent record labels that allow you to download some stuff for free.

The reason Radiohead was able to do that is because their corporate record contract was up.

Torrents are great, but just like any technology they can be used wrongly. (My personal belief is that I don't download anything I would otherwise buy, especially if its for professional use. As I believe in paying for the tools you use to make your own living.)

I always hated TPB anyway. 1 - they stole my company initials, 2 - it was too hard to search for things there

Problem with TPG was that they got too arrogant, anyone remember reading those letters they posted mocking people who were notifiying them of copyright infringement?

There were a lot of big shots in those letter (Hollywood, Microsoft etc.) it's no wonder the Swedish government cracked down on them so hard.
