Do you resent the criminal record check?
While I appreciate Korea's security concerns, I think asking for an apostilled unsealed rap sheet is an affront. Why can't theyrun a background check themselves if they are so suspicious? That would answer their security concerns and not insult perfectly innocent ESL teachers.
Meanwhile I know a school in Anseong where the headmistress spent time in the penitentiary and the male Korean teacher (who also happens to be the laziest human being I've ever met) likes to hold the little girls and give them passionate wet kisses until they're able to squirm away.
As someone who has never had so much as a traffic ticket, I call on the foreign population of South Korea to rise up and protest the requirement that we provide our own background check.
At the very least prospective employers should provide us with their rap sheets, and certainly let us know if there are child molesters among the Korean faculty. |

I think that everyone that wants to protest the unfair hoops they have to jump through should vote with their feet or shut up. Obviously the feeling of persecution didn't outweigh the benefits of accepting employment here, so why are you now crying foul? Or perhaps you were the one that got dragged here kicking and screaming against your will? |

you need a criminal background check to teach kids in the US. Even to work with kids in any capacity really.
an apostille is kind of a pain, but necessary to show that the document is legitimate.
YOU are applying to work for THEM. The burden of proof is upon YOU to show that you will be a good employee. Just like any other job. It is your responsibility to get your background check, just like it is to show someone a resume or a letter of recommendation.
You are offended because people suspect you are a criminal? It's almost like you're an ethnic minority...weird. |

Because (in Canada), the Protection of Privacy and Freedom of Information Act does not allow a third party access to one's records. |

You know, of all the things to whine about, this is not one of them. When MY son was in school, I sure as heck was glad that HIS school did criminal records checks! Am I offended that I need one? Hell no!
The argument that "They don't need one, so why do I?" argument doesn't hold water either. There are a ton of things here in Korea that I don't have to do, that the Korean teachers do have to do, should THEY whine and complain?????
Geesh, sometime I wonder about the emotional maturity of some people. |

The CBC comes with the territory. Required by the immigration office. This issue is being discussed at length in one of the stickies on visa concerns. You might place a thread to discuss this there. I doubt you will find a lot of people sympathetic to your poll or your complaint.

Don't know what country your from. Any job you take is going to require a criminal check and a drug test. Universities check black lists before they admit students. It's how the world works. |

To get a criminal record check in the US, you go to the local police station.
I resent that immigration won't look at my CRC because I'm not on an E2. |

I don't resent the idea of having a criminal background check.
I resent HOW Korea requires us to obtain a criminal background check.
I resent having to order my background check from the US and having to wait over 1 month for it to arrive in Korea.
I resent having to re-submit a background check from the US, despite not having been back to the US since the last time I submitted a background check. |

Ditto - and it's a much bigger pain for Canadians. |

In addition to what other people have already mentioned...the vast majority of the foreign population of South Korea are NOT teachers. Most are foreign wives, military personal or DDD workers ( the last of whom would have no problems providing a CBC) if it meant they could get a much better paying and more comfortable job...like teaching. I doubt you'll find a sympathetic ear in any of the above cases. Foreign teachers make up a very tiny percentage of the foreign population. |

The only complaint that has merit is the one I have emphasised.
The first one - I don't think Korea decide the criteria for US government issued background checks. Just be thankful Korea don't want a national check from the US (as they do from every other country).
The second - Ditto. The problem there is with the US system.
The third - I can't argue with that. As ridiculous as it is, it is not an reason to abandon background checks all together (as some would have you believe). Instead, Korea needs to change the regulations so that, as long as you stay in Korea, a local check will suffice as a 'top-up' for renewals. This was supposed to be the case after the new procedure was implemented. |

Let's have background checks every month, you can never be sure who is in a sleeper cell masquerading as an ESL teacher. |

Just wait till they demand hourly temperature checks and monthly medical exams like a certain hagwan in another thread. |
