So I am moving back to Korea after 2 years away. My first stint was in Daegu but this time around I have decided to go to Busan for two major reasons:
1: The weather is warmer in the winter than Seoul and the beach is there in the summer.
2: Access to Fukuoka, Japan is right there.
Do you think these are solid reasons for choosing Busan? Can you point out any other great about living in Busan compared to the rest of Korea? Also, where is the best area to live for ESL teachers? I like being in the center of all the action.
Thanks. |

As I spent time in Fukuoka the quick access to Japan is a darn good reason.
Ipuudo ramen is more than enough reason to go back there. 一風堂ラメン
Hakara is a major network hub for Japan so lots to do and you can get anywhere easily.
Up to you really. A city is what you make of it, but it never hurts to have easy access to travel to get the heck out every so often. |

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with your reasoning. The only other advantages would be
a: Closer to the southern parts of Korea than you would be in Seoul.
b: No where near as crowded as Seoul.
c: A lot more to do than in Daegu.
d. Gimhae Intl. Airport has some international flights to Thailand, Japan etc.... so going to Incheon is not always necessary.
e. I think it's a much more beautiful city than Daegu or Seoul, but that's just me.
f. Great hiking all around the city and less crowded than in Seoul.
If you're looking to be in the center of action I would recommend that you try to be placed in PNU (Pusan National Univeristy, KNU (Kyungsung National University) or Haeundae area. All of these places are party areas and have loads of foreigners, bars and clubs. Seomyeon is the center of the city and isn't a bad place to be also. It has equal access to all of those place via the subway so it's a good median.
Good Luck.

much cleaner air than either Daegu or Seoul, partially because of that everpresent ocean breeze
seriously, half the air pollution on average in terms of particulates and nitrogen dioxide (though not today as the last three days a major pollution cloud system from mainland China moved past the southernmost region from Mokpo to Busan - whereas usually Chinese industrial pollution hits Incheon area and goes thru Seoul)
i make checking the air pollution levels part of my daily routine (same time as checking the weather and email) and Busan is often the only big city with blue dots of good air on the air quality map |

Out of laziness, could you post the site for air quality? |

IMHO Busan is the best city to live in Korea. Seoul may be tops in some categories due to its sheer size, but with a population of 4.5 million, Busan is no slouch even then. And for overall livibility, access to nice beaches and to Japan, it wins hands down. |

Yes, could you please post the site for air quality? But don't do it out of laziness. Do it to be a good guy. |

exactly,.. i didn't post it as there is a thread i contributed to EVERY time there was a pollution problem last fall winter and this spring, a thread anyone can get by search function "pollution" (which works, i just tried).
if you click today you'll notice: the wave of pollution began on the west coast on thursday and will leave by the end of today
also notice you can click your area for hour-by-hour or day-by-day, month-by-month look at levels of particulates, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. ozone only applies to summer and carbon dioxide is useless, doesn't register, as it's not a substance that floats out in the open as a danger but in confined areas
sulphur dioxide is often registered in Ulsan, Gwangyang, Yeosu and Jinju because of smokestacks of car manufacturing, steel making, pulp and paper industry and silk production
nitrogen dioxide is most often a problem in incheon seoul and daegu
particulates may be the biggest health issue with studies showing heart attacks correlated with it, and patterns vary depending on time of year |
