|
|
I just have a quick question for anyone who may be able to help me.
I've been in Korea for about 9 months and my school has asked me to renew my contract, which I would be happy to do. The only problem is that the two weeks vacation is a little too short for me because of family issues back home that I need to resolve.
My school has agreed to try to find a way for me to extend that period and asked me to look into it as well. Is there any way that I can still renew my contract and extend the period between contracts?
Are the vacation days that I haven't used carried over to the new contract? I've only used about three days so far and I don't plan on using the rest of the 17 days before my contract is over.
I hope someone can help me. Thanks! =] |

I'm a little confused.
First off, under GEPIK you get 20 days.. aka 4 weeks of vacation a year PLUS your 2 week calendar home leave on top of the vacation if you renew.
Summer vacation should be coming up in a month. Why not take whatever time you need during that vacation? School will definitely be closed for a month if not 5 weeks during this time.
Essentially the school would be allowing you to take some of your vacation just prior to starting the 2nd contract. I don't see why they wouldn't agree to do this. It makes perfect sense.
And yes, according to the GEPIK contract (please read it) you can roll over up to 7 unused vacation days over to the next year.
btw.. can I ask you a stupid question? WHY aren't you using your vacation days? you're NOT going to get paid for them and you can only take them when school is not in session anyways. This means august, january and possibly last 2 weeks of feb. |

How long do you want to go home for?
Use 10 of your 17 vacation days, plus the 2 weeks home leave you get for re-signing. That will be a full 4 weeks right there.
Roll the 7 unused vacation days into your next contract and you're set. If you need more time away, use all 17 days. |

that is the ideal solution but only provided that the school agrees to allow him to take his extra "home leave" early.
He/She is 9 months into the contract, and summer vacation is a month away.
Means his/her next contract starts in Sept. |

I heard from another teacher that she went home for Christmas even though school is in session. Unless your school cares more about the paper work and wants to be inflexible, I'm sure they'll find a way to help you.
Emphasis to your co-teacher that there is nothing that you can do because it is a family issue. They might be testing you to see if you'll bend before the school bends.
Ask your co-teacher to call her co-teacher friends at other schools to see how they would handle this situation. Korean teachers know the loopholes on how to get around the Board of Education's requirements better than Foreign Teachers.
Bottom line is that if they know you and like your teaching style they'll find a way to save the money (1,200,000 won for a recruiter) and the hassle of getting a new teacher (Unless your VP or Principal is a sticker for rules ie. deskwarming). |
