Wonder if anyone caught the ad on the job board for a "Canadian Foreign School". It seems to be a wanna-be international school, but is marketing itself to Koreans. Usually local students aren't permitted to attend international schools.

Job-wise, they want licensed teachers - just like international schools would - but they only provide 2 weeks of vacation a year. They also claim to be set up on the Nova Scotia elementary school curriculum, but back in Nova Scotia the Education Act mandates 180 days (I believe) of instruction each year, leaving about 3 months total vacation, not two weeks. 2 weeks is Korean hogwon level. What's up with that?

I'm not tire-kicking - I'm genuinely curious about the place. Anyone know?

The number of days worked, and the curriculum are two entirely different things. I don't see the connection.

It does suck that they only offer 2 weeks vacation. I interviewed at Seoul Academy International School and they had the standard 2 months off in the summer, and about 180 working days a year, but the money wasn't very good (and no housing, just key money).

I'm going to apply for the position. If I find out any further info I'll let you know.

I've heard of the school before but I have almost no info on it.

I went to the International School of Kuala Lumpur, and there was a number of Malaysians. Not a lot, but still a fair amount.

There are also different tiers of international schools. There were something like 5 other schools in KL. I think it has something to do with the organization they are accredited by. I think there's a Seoul International School, with an American cirriculum, who's probably accredited to teach International Bacheloreate or Advanced Placement classes.

When I was looking at jobs in Bangkok, there were a bunch of international schools looking for teachers with either an education or a psych degree. Some of them seemed a little dodgy. To me they seemed like hagwons with better financial backing. Take that for what it's worth, considering I never worked for one, and only talked to people there in passing.

Strictly speaking, this is true. They could take the curriculum as done in NS schools in 180 days, and do it here *really slowly*. On the other hand, (and I'm basing this on nothing except what I'm reading in the ad), the 50-week work year implies that they're going to operate much like a hogwon, with month-to-month enrollment, rather than a Western-oriented school. Or they're going to work the kids right through traditional Korean winter vacation and just give them the weeks in August.

Has anyone ever heard of an accredited IS that ran 50 weeks out of the year?

Anyway, I know nothing about this particular school. Which is why I'm asking about it in the OP.

Look up the entry requirements for the big international schools here in Korea and you'll see the stipulation that the kids must hold foreign passports - or their parents must.

The Korean title is JCE Junior Hagwon. I'm pretty sure this is just another language hagwon.

I also suspect this is a pseudo-hogwan of some sort. It is not an accredited International School anyway.

As for the curriculum: any curriculum documents I've seen have simply consisted of a list of things that should be learned. THere is never a time frame attached. For example there would be a list of things to accomplish in each subject at each grade level, and it's up to the teacher to figure out how to accomplish it all in whatever time frame they have to work with. Having more time would simply mean that a teacher could go into more depth on a particular topic.

I suspect they just run "Intensive" programs in the winter and summer break times however....
