I accidently posted this in the wrong forum, so I wanted to post it here,

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=157813

Unless a mod can move the topic for me?

My after school program has asked me for a photo copy of my ARC and bank book. I asked them what for, and my manager told me it's for some sort of teacher insurance the company uses (and the company pays for it, so no charge to me). The insurance is in case something happens to a teacher or student in the classroom.. I guess so the company has some sort of protection against law suits or other charges.

The private company that runs the after school program is Daekyo (which is a giant corp.) and seems to be trusted.

Any experience with this kind of request? Ever heard of such a thing? Should I look more into this? Should I request more information?

My manager is already a bit annoyed with me because I am always careful before giving up anything or doing anything and I always cross check with my girlfriend or any one that speaks Korean. I guess she probably thinks I am 'over cautious' and is annoyed by me although she has never said so.

Advice?!?!

Two users told me it sounds fishy, and they may be setting up a way to screw me, so I posted this,

I have requested more information about it, and I am going to open up a new bank account (and move any salary into it), just for safety.

(I figure if they really want to screw me, they more than likely would have had my old bank account info anyway, from when I copied my bank book for my salary deposits)

A new bank account won't hurt I guess!

If they pay for it. Why do they need your bankbook?

Yea I was thinking of that too (that is what made me suspicious to begin with). I don't doubt there is some sort of insurance because they DID photo copy the Korean co-teacher's Korean ID card as well as mine.. however I didn't notice the Korean co-teachers bank book photo copy.

I am wondering if they are trying to pull something on me while they are doing a legit thing as well.. if that makes any sense.

Any ideas here?

NOTE:

I have no complaints about this school. Actually they have been quite responsive to requests and have paid me on time and given receipt of my salary the same day as my payment. Also, they reimbursed a lot of my expenses and this is a public school. They don't seem like the kind of school to screw some one over, but you never know...

My universal rule.

If you did not provide a service to a foreign entity where you expect a payment of over 10k USD you do not give out your bank info.

May be an over exaggeration to you, but I stand by it.
