Yeah, I had to do this about 6 months ago.
Getting a CBC and an apostille are two separate steps. I live in a suburb of Chicago, so I went to my local police station and requested a certified CBC. It was free. Just make sure that it has a certified stamp from the secretary or some form of official seal from the police office.
Next, take it to the Secratary of State office in the loop. Here is the address:
111 E. Monroe
Springfield, Illinois 62756
(217) 558-2972
It only costs $2 and it took about 15 minutes when I went in the middle of a work day. Afterwards, you should have a certified CBC and apostille approved for foreign use.
Here is the SOS website if you want more information: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/index/divisions.html |

I just did this two weeks ago. For the city of Chicago, you'll need to do two things. 1st, go to the police headquarters at 3510 S Michigan for the CBC. They're only open M-F until like 4:30 so you might have to take off work like I did. It'll cost $5. They aren't open on Holidays either. They give you the CBC with the police station seal but then you have to go to another location to get a 2nd seal from the city (i'm forgetting the address but they'll tell you...it's downtown). It really didn't take a long time for all of this which was surprising.
After that, take it to the Chicago Secretary of State office at 17 N State St Ste 1000. Fill out the form on the wall saying how many copies you need, etc. It costs $2/copy. They'll give it to you in about 10 minutes. Done and done.
I'm still trying to get the right job (Busan), so I actually haven't sent everything off yet, but everything should be fine. I was actually told in one interview I was having that a lot of the immigration offices are currently having issues with the state-wide criminal checks so it's probably best to do the one here in Chicago. |

Everything sonicmark said is right on.
While you're at the Secretary of State's office, take your diploma to get it apostilled too (you'll need to have the copy notarized first) just to save yourself a trip. |
