You can open an account at ETradebank and Everbank without coming to America, although they do have forms to mail in. Everbank is nicknamed "foreverbank" so maybe should not be your first choice.
Yep, if you show up at the Korean bank without your ARC, they will deny you access. If you get a Korean driver's license, that is good 5 years and will substitute for your ARC while you are not working (did for me anyway).
You can go to a different bank (Shinhan) and open an account with your passport and then you can still have access when you loose your ARC.
Good idea to get your money into a US bank with a debit card for international travel. |

I had a checking account I let die. And I used to send Travellers Checks by EMS. I went back and opened a new account, I wire money to my checking account and pay my bills online. Convenient as hell for me. Much simpler than Travelers Checks! |
