I have the option for having a 24+ hour layover in Hong Kong on my way to Bangkok. Do you think this is worth it? Are there things to see or do around the airport area in Hong Kong? Any hotels that you recommend closeby?

You can find a guesthouse in the Kowloon (downtown) area for about $30-35 a night.

HK kicks ass. No shortage of things to do.

I had a 25 hour layover in Hong Kong just last February and it was definitely worth it.

I pulled it off with no sleep and no hotel. Checked my carry on at the airport luggage check and was off on the train to Central HK. Dinner and a coffee to start then took a taxi to the Victoria Peak tram. Wandered around for an hour or so. Came back down and got a taxi to the ferry terminal and went to Macau. Casino hopped on their free busses and played some blackjack. Took a taxi downtown and saw the sites, you can get a few "massage" "ladies" to show you around for a tip. Went back to HK and took the train to Disneyland. Walked around the outside along the ocean. Got back on the train and went on the Lantau cable car. Saw the big Buddha statue. Came back down the cable cars and headed back to the airport.

It was all done with plenty of time if you don't mind not sleeping. The biggest concern is arriving at the airport while the airport train and baggage checks are still operating. Good luck!

Wow!!!!
...hum and what were you doing with the massage ladies before you tipped them? Laughing

But still that was a good layover, did you have to do much planning?

5am, I was beat trying to collect a second wind and they were bored with no customers in site, it just worked out, haha. I had thought about the peak, macau, and disneyland but had no idea about the cable cars. It turned out to be just a few train stops away from DLand and I saw some advertisements floating around the subway.
