I was told by my boss that I have to get a document from the US embassy. My boss doen't know the name of this document, but the Education Office in Korea needs it. When I asked my boss asked why he doesn't know the name of the document, he told me that the Education Office in Korea doesn't know the name of the document!

They also don't have an example to show what I need. So I have to call the US embassy
1. to ask for something I don't know the name of
2. to give to the Korean Education Office
3. at which point I assume, won't be able to identify it as what they need.

This is to prove that I have a legal diploma. I came after the regulations changed. I did everything I was supposed to. I've been here for a year and a half.

My boss went to the office with my diploma twice. Should I keep telling him to keep going. Korean laws does seem to change often (depending on the person, mood, weather, etc.)

They are probably asking for a residency certificate from the IRS (form 6166). To get this form you need to fill out and mail in form 8802. They need it so they can exempt you from paying Korean tax.

Edit: Oops. That's not it. Your boos is looking for a third party verification of your education. My school wanted one too. I got it at http://www.criminalrecordcheck.com/. It's also possible your boss is wanting you to go to the embassy to have your diploma(s) apostilled. Still, do the IRS thing so you don't have to pay tax here.

Good Lord don't I know it!

I quit my last as programme 5 motnhs into the contract. We left on good terms and when I got my new job I just transfered my visa over as it was still live for 7 more months.

My new boss asks me to get another criminal record check.

I was like - Look I already have a visa valid until sept 2009 - what's the point?

They said - the new pricipal at the elementary school wants it.

But why?

They want it.

"Look it will cost me 40,000 won to get it and then 50,00 won to secure mail it here and then 60,000 Won to get it apostiled. Are you going to pay the 150,000 Won..?"

'No you must do it.'

'No way. Look I have a legal and valid visa until sept 2009. Now one of the immigration stipulations for obtaining said visa and resident card is to have a valid criminal background check. Is that right?'

'Yes.'

So the fact that I have a visa, alien card valid until sept 2009 and that they transfered my visa over to the new school MEANS THAT I HAVE A VALID CRIM BACKROUND CHECK UNTIL 2009. Correct?'

'Yes.'

'So Im not paying 150,000 Won for something that isn't neccessary. And also legally - I don't have to as my current one is valid.'

'The principal doesn't know that.'

'Explain it to him and just ask him to call immigration and ask if I have a valid cbc. They keep these things on file, you know.'

'He wants the new cbc... etc...'

Never bothered doing it and they forgot about it.

But the sheer ridiculousness of it. All they had to do was either see the obvious (I have visa therefor am cleared) or just call immigration to check I provided a vallid cbc (the fact I have visa of course proves this a priori...)

Lol

It seems like there is little trust Korea has in us. That's because some recruiters desperate to meet their quotas and others deal with fake diplomas and documents. Also, Korean professors and others have had fake diplomas. This has occured somewhat in the U.S., but you hear more about this over here.

That said, immigration, if they want something, they should ask for it, and the manager or boss should have a clue as to what they want. It shouldn't be rocket science. I can understand that independent verification may look different, and they may not have a sample, but they can have something typed up in English and put on their website and tell people to consult the website. It's not rocket science, for heaven's sake.

As far as the story told by the other person in this thread, I am not surprised they wanted him to do an unecessary CBC. A friend of mine was about to finish his contract and go to Canada. He basically had a week or two left. His new co-teacher who replaced the previous one asked him to do a health check. He argued with her about it, and she insisted so he called GEPIK. I guess they really chewed her out, because she got upset that he called.

Well, she should pay attention and know what she's talking about before asking the foreigner to do a background check. The principal who wanted the other poster to do another CBC was dealing with people who didn't want to explain to him that it wasn't necessary. They didn't want to offend the guy high up on the food chain.

So I called the US Embassy (it's 02-397-4114) and they asked me they same thing I knew they would.

Embassy: What do you need?

Me: My boss told me that I need something from you to prove I have a valid diploma. The Korean Office of Education is requesting it.

Embassy: What is the name of the document?

Me: I don't know...

Embassy: You'll have to get your boss to find out the name of the document before I can help you.

Me: My boss has tried twice and the Office of Education doesn't know the name of the document.

Embassy: ... What is it you need?

Me: I don't know. Just proof.

Embassy: I don't think I can help you without knowing what you need.

Me: Yeah, I figured that. I'm sorry for wasting your time.

I called to get my boss off my back. He's not asking to get it because he wants to double check. I think the Education Office is demanding that I be registered with them and then not excepting me diploma.

This is my second hagwon. So I figured it wouldn't be a problem. I also have an F4 visa. To top it off, this means my boss didn't register me yet even though I've been working there about 6 months.

I don't think they speak English but who knows. I'll see if my boss will give me their number.
