Hi,
I know there are a ton of threads on E-2 questions, but I think my situation isn't terribly common.
I'm coming to Korea in July from the States with my family (wife and two kids). I don't have a job yet, but I'm not concerned about that. I'm a certified primary teacher with two years experience in that plus over six years of ESL (lots of it in Korea). I have a few leads in private schools, and if worse comes to worse, I can work in a hogwan till I find something better.
For an E-2 do I:
a)Need to get my diploma properly apostilled or do they mean simply notorized?
b)Get an FBI background check, or from my municipal police department? And does this need to be apostilled/notorized as well?
c)Need to come back to the US for my visa, or are they still doing visa runs to Japan?
What documents do I need for my children and wife? We have our marriage certificate plus notorized translation and originial birth certificates. Will we need to get these apostilled/ notorized as well? Technically, they're already I suppose with the state embossed seal, but I also have had plenty of experience with Korean Immigration.
Thanks for your help! |

I've been here 2 years with my wife and 2 kids. I would stay away from a hogwon. It is just too much risk for a family. I moved to a public school. It gives a lot more vacation time for you and the kids.
1. You just need your original diploma.
2. I got a FBI check. Immigration will not have a problem with a clean FBI check. It took 3 and 1/2 weeks to get mine back plus you will need to get an apostille.
3. Since you are coming with your family. I would get my visa ahead of time.
4. The original kids birth certificates and marriage certificates. No translation. I'm not sure about the South Korean Embassy in the states. But we just gave them a copy of the original certificates. You will need 3 passport photos each for you, the kids, and your wife. I did mine in the Philippines
They gave my wife and kids a 90 day visa. When they got here I went to immigration and changed them to spousal visas. In about 3 weeks we received her ARC ID card with the kids information on the back of the card. |

You don't need to get it apostilled or notarized if you use the original. If you use a copy, it needs to be notarized and stamped by the Korean consulate, no Apostille necessary. Get a couple copies.
b)Get an FBI background check, or from my municipal police department? And does this need to be apostilled/notorized as well?
any form of CBC will be ok. and this needs to be apostilled.
c)Need to come back to the US for my visa, or are they still doing visa runs to Japan?
because you have done time in Korea, you can do a visa run in Japan

marriage certificate and citizenship cards. no notirization needed
