Hey guys and gals. I would like to learn as much Korean as I can before I depart for K-land sometime in the next couple of months.

Money is extremely tight these days and I don't think I can afford a rosetta stone or anything like that.

Anyone have some good recommendations for cheap or free places to learn the language, starting from scratch?

Thanks for the input

Wait until you get here.

If you're a guy, find some female friends (who are preferably also teachers), buy a book and have them give you lessons once a week. Two of my coworkers and I have a dinner date every Wednesday where we catch up, have some coffee and learn some Korean. I usually pay for dinner, but I wouldnt have to. So, free.

If you're a female just reverse to horny male friends.

There are also plenty of free lessons around the city on saturdays.

Or just do a 'language exchange' and you might learn a little Korean and a little something about the language of love.

You could try learning from the Sogang Uni website
It's free and quite fun Smile

That should be enough to tie you over. You may also want to download Korean101 lessons through a bit torrent. They're pretty good, especially when just beginning.

Rosetta Stone is crap anyway. Some of the sites mentioned are better, in particular the Sogang Uni website......complimented with the Sogang books which you can buy from Kyobo bookstores

Once you arrive in Korea, you can contact me. My wife does private Korean classes. If you live in Seoul - preferably in the Southwest corner of Seoul, give me a shout.

It seems I pimp-out my wife for every "Korean Language" thread. Embarassed

The way my memory works, I find it really hard to learn a language without the context of being in the country and surrounded by it. I started learning before I came, but got confused by all the different ways of saying things depending on level of politeness you need. When you get here you realise that there is usually one main way that will get you by (as a foreigner anyway) in most situations.

Having said that, if I were starting from scratch knowing what I know now, I would

*learn to read Korean. This is easy to do but there are a few small quirks that taking some lessons when you get here will help clear up. Even 2 or 3 lessons REALLY helped my pronunciation and reading.
*work on builiding vocabulary - maybe get the Korean word of the day app on facebook or something.

I wouldn't bother too much with sentences or grammar until you get here and have the context. That's my opinion and what would've worked for me in hindsight.
