Suspect killed 10-year-old boy to avoid drunk driving charge
June 16, 2009
A 48-year-old interior decorator surnamed Lee has confessed to killing an elementary school student because he was afraid of receiving a penalty for drunk driving.
The suspect told police on Sunday that he shot the 10-year-old boy with an air rifle and abandoned the body on a hillside outside Gwangju, South Jeolla, on June 4 to conceal the fact that he had been driving without a license.
The alleged murderer, detained last Friday, had struck the child while driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Bukbu Police Precinct in Gwangju.
The police had previously reported that the boy was hit by Lees car around 8:30 p.m. in front of a taekwondo academy in Buk District.
The boy was leaving the academy at that time.
Lee apparently drove the victim to a nearby hospital but treatment was not possible.
The hospital was about to close and Magnetic Resonance Imaging could not be performed.
A closed circuit surveillance camera installed in the hospital filmed the suspect and the victim leaving the hospital in the car.
According to police, Lee put the boy in the front seat of his car and drove to a reservoir 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) away from the site of the initial car accident.
He shot the boy four times and abandoned his body.
Police officers captured the suspect on Wednesday after a tip-off. Investigators said Lee told friends after the murder that he had abandoned the dead child.
An autopsy performed by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation confirmed the boy died from gunshot wounds.
Witnesses said the murder victim had not been seriously hurt in the accident.
Three high school girls told police Sunday that the boy had been able to stand and walk after being struck by Lees car.
Other witnesses said a man answering to a description of the suspect followed the boy and put him into the back of his car and drove away.
There were no blood stains in the back seat, said an officer who asked not to be named. We are assuming the boy was only slightly hurt.
The police said Lees driving license was revoked for drunken driving in March 2005.
Lee was banned from taking a drivers license test for two years from September 2007 after he was caught driving without a license.

The whole 'dring someone I just hit to the hospital' thing in Korea is beyond me. |

He went to a far extreme in attempt to cover up his mistake. This goes far beyond a simple lie and demonstrates once again what people will do to save face or avoid responsibility for their actions. What a shame. |

However - the guy was driving without a license - and killed an innocent young boy - just to evade being charged (driving without a license)...
I hope this guy is the first guy to be executed - under the new Korean laws for "the death penalty for persons found guilty of molesting or killing a child"...
lets hope he is executed...
sometimes .... some Korean people... just have no common sense.. or empathy for other human beings...
However - this being Korea and all... and the murderer being a Korean guy - I guess he will just get OFF with a 12-month suspended sentence... |
I hope this doesn't turn into a discussion about the death penalty, BUT, this is definitely one of those cases where it would be hard to argue that the perpetrator deserves to continue living
what a piece of scum... |

Poor kid.
All of that just because the guy would've been caught and penalized for drunk driving. I don't see how murder is a better option.
Sometimes you have to wonder just what runs through the minds of people like that who think it was a good idea... |

I wonder why he's so dumb as to tell his buddies about it. Otherwise it seems he would have gotten away with it..... which doesn't say much for the coppers. |

No one else found this a bit weird? It's not like Taco Bell refusing service because they're about to close. This poor kid was hit by a car and they send him away? |

trying to suppress evidence is not stupid but the way this guy tried to get away was incredibly stupid. He actually tried bringing the kid to a hospital. At that stage he will be prosecuted by the police. If he just hit and run the chances of him ever being caught were slim. You only hear about idiots being caught by the police, most of the time they get away. |

If this guy gets anything less than "execution" or "20 years in prison" - then Korea really is a joke. What example would the judicial system be giving people? |

Yeah, that jumped out for me too. Who ever made that call deserves to be asked some serious questions. |

I wonder where the guy got a gun.
Edit -- Just saw that it was an air rifle. Makes no sense since they only sell the plastic pellets here.

WTH? hospitals close? really? i've never heard of that. i think that should saddle the hospital with some responsibility for all this.

an air rifle? why? whats the point in that? u mean one of those little plastic hang guns my students have that fire the little white plastic beads? and how exactly is that supposed to resolve the issue? did he think that was going to kill the boy? or was it just for kicks and giggles?... i mean, unelss uve got one of those point blank on somebodies eye or ear canal i dont see how anyone could expect it to do any real harm.
i digress.
others have stated their opinion, so i will as well... im against the death penalty in every form. i only want death to be delievered to one person on this planet and thats the sick freak north of here. a life sentence without the possibility of parol can be worse than death. and if korean prisons r anything like those in america, the inmates know how to handle people that rape, beat, or kill women and children. |

WHAT.
You're kidding me.
So this random guy comes to a hospital with a 10-year-old boy...and nobody asks what happened, or if the two are even related?
WHAT. THE. HELL.
Please someone help me out, here. |

that's what I was thinking. obviously the guy is a crazy bastard, there are plenty of those anywhere you go, but wtf is wrong with the hospital workers that they don't notice the guy is drunk, a stranger to the kid, don't ask for ID, don't ask for parents, don't call the police..
no, it's closing time, you better go somewhere else?
whoever is responsible for THAT better be found out and charged.
koreans just don't learn. after the abduction of those two girls who were murdered a while back, oh yes, everyone vowed not to let this happen again, they were all going to be more vigilant, people were going to start challenging strangers who were accosting kids, policemen were going to start stepping up patrols and security, everyone was going to say something if they saw strange looking people taking kids anywhere.
they had many witnesses that something was up and yet nobody did anything about it.
this type of thing will continue to happen.
so terrible for the parents who have to deal with this. |

For me, 99% of the blame rests with this ass of a man. His actions are beyond defence.
But that remaining 1%, IMO, is spread out amongst the people who witnessed the accident and didn't call 119, the Taekwondo school for not looking after their students, and the hospital for not questioning this man (and then calling the police).
Now, I wasn't there, so I believe there's lot's of wiggle room here for that 1%, but they should take a hard look at what they could have done to stop this. |
