I have noticed for the past nine months that my students plagarise often. I have told them several times that this is not acceptable and they should rewrite their essay but they don't seem to understand. I have even spoken to my director about the matter and he didnt care. Does anyone else have this problem with their students? Is it acceptable to plagarise in Korea?

If you work at a hagwon and you have informed your director, considered the issue closed. Accept the fact that it is considered to be acceptable behavior at your hagwon. Just teach exactly the same, knowing that this is happening. Don't raise a stink about it. A hagwon is a business, not a school, and your boss obviously feels like running a low-to-mid level hagwon is where his profit margin lies.

As long as your check clears, on time, every month, don't make an issue of this. After your contract is finished, you can choose to get a new job if you so choose, but for now accept that the job you have isn't trying to get your students into Harvard. There is definitely a need for hagwons that cater to low-to-mid level students, and while plagarism is repugnant in Western countries it definitely is not here.

If you choose to fight your boss on this issue, you will lose. Teach as well as you can, get paid every month, repeat for as long as you desire.

yes, unfortunately it is.

you can choose to ignore it as someone else suggested, or you can give the papers back to your students and tell them it's unacceptable.

try putting a large inked "X" across their pages so their parents will see it. try assigning topics that can't possibly be plagiarized; if their E level is sufficient - and it must be if they are writing - insist on an essay as to why what they are doing is unacceptable.

it will continue as long as teachers allow it, plain and simple.

your director may not be aware of just how wrong it is; as well as the seriousness of the consequences.

have you explained that aspect of it? how they can even be expelled from uni if caught doing this in the west? as well as receiving a zero on a paper?

maybe you haven't made your case strong enough - and there really isn't a situation where you can be too strong - it's very serious and should be regarded as such.

there have been other threads on this before, search back a bit and you'll find them.
