Just wondering where the Dave's community sits on the whole ATEK situation. I've enjoyed the discussions on it here recently, but found myself wondering what the general feeling is out there. ATEK claims to represent about 20,000 people, but I'm wondering just how much support they have.
Where do you stand w/r to ATEK?
Comments backing either position are welcome! |

ATEK has never claimed to represent 20,000 teachers, but this has already been covered in other threads. It was something the Korea Times decided to say to give the story more gravity. We specifically told them we weren't representing anyone. |

If that's the case, you should demand that The Korean Times retract that article or at the very least clarify the number of people ATEK says it represents. The way it stands now, it's very misleading and false. |

Yes, we complained. They said because it says "for 20,000" and not "of 20,000" that it is clear. : : |

I don't think ATEK "demands" anything. If they did you would complain. What is demanding that Korea Times retract anything going to accomplish? If they did retract it, it would only be another thing that you or "Hanson" doesn't happen read in the KT or on the various threads here on Daves. |

K-'journalism'!
Newspapers in K-land are not, exactly, bastions of journalistic integrity. |

I have an E-2 and have had one for well over 10 years. My wife is an F-4.
I voted against ATEK, but I also am not in favor of Chicken's vendetta.
ATEK has begun on a bad note and is going after the wrong issue in a manner which is clearly divisive. The Korea Times article clearly establishes ATEK as a representative and authority for English teachers in Korea regardless of how the number of 20,000 was presented.
ATEK does not represent me. The 5 members of ATEK should have spent more time in research and polling the various groups of foreign teachers before going off half-cocked and raising this issue in the media.
I refuse to support any group which so haphazardly uses the media to stir up sentiment which will ultimately lead to more problems and more legislation for foreigners here.
If I am wrong, then so be it. But I predict that the Koreans will enact stricter regulations, not soften them. Also, I predict ATEK will die off before the fall semester. |

Why does the phrase 'barking up the wrong tree' seem so applicable here.
If ATEK were successful in (a) allowing us to own our own visas and (b) getting immi to keep records on file so that we didn't have to submit the same paperwork again and again I'd gladly give them a W100,000+ annual membership fee. Getting me out of an HIV or drugs test isn't even worth something that can be paid with paper money, imo. |

I agree completely. It just seems weird to me to make this E-2 vs. other visas (or "discrimination" as ATEK is calling it) the priority... |

I'm being optimistic here but how do you that that wouldn't happen as a result of all the complaints to the HRC of Korea? |

Double mad dog bingo! The day ATEK tackles (or even decides to tackle) this issue is the day I climb on board.
I cast my vote as "undecided" because my support is conditional. |

Actually, in the very first news article that announced ATEK's formation, visa portability was announced as one of our key objectives. |
