|

In August, I'll be coming to Seoul to teach. So will my girlfriend, but she won't be doing any teaching. Just joining me.
She'd like to stay the whole year.
US Citizens' can stay 90 as a tourist without a visa, correct? Could she just leave and reenter the country every 90 days? Say hop a quick flight or boat to Japan and come right back? |

yes, enter for 90 days and then take a trip out and back to get a new stamp. |

The Korean government doesn't frown upon this...or sort of catch on? |

Also, I'm reading mixed things on the web.
Can US citizens stay 90 days without a vist, or only 30 days. It's a mixed bag out there.
Anyone know FOR SURE? |

For US citizens, it's 30 days that can get extended for another 60 days at immigration.
Your wife would be better off getting a 'spouse' visa-- She can't legally work with it (since she doesn't want to), but can stay here as long as you're employed.
Immi will probably catch on, since you'll probably deal with the same official for the year. I doubt she can stay here w/out a visa and counting on the tourist stamps to carry her through. |

Don't think the "spouse" visa will work. We're not married. Or is there a loophole for lovers
Ummm... Helpful comment thrylos.
I know she can get a tourist visa, good for 90 days, but ultimately we'd get to the same predicament.
Anyone ever actually tried (or known someone who tried) quick country-hopping back and forth to extend a stay? Is immigration "catching on" an issue? |

actually it's been changed - US citizens automatically receive a 90 day tourist visa upon entering. I know, I left and came back in April. They automatically stamped me for 90 days. |

Can anyone back up Moosehead's good news?
Looking for a second to the motion...
Anyone have friends or family come to visit recently and got a look at their passport stamp?
Kind of important
Also, I'm still wondering about my original question.
Anyone have first hand knowledge about getting a new tourist stamp by leaving the country for a day or two and then coming right back? |

Yes moosehead is correct, it is 90 days. Just got back from Tokyo in April and they stamped my girlfriends passport for another 90 day stay. |

I think we've already answered your q - hmmm - it doesn't matter if you leave and come back the same day - as long as you leave the country's borders -
next time go to the embassy websites of the various countries you want to visit - they will always have visa info on there as to which nationalities need to apply for a visa and which ones receive an "entry visa" which is when you can just get off the plane/boat/walk and receive a visa at the border. |

Thanks for the help.
Good info on the length of a tourist stamp.
One last time I will ask...
Has anyone made an extended stay in Korea without a visa, by periodically hopping quickly in and out of the country to get a new stamp.
Is immigration "catching on" an issue?
Is there any reason to think immigration would frown upon this? |

It is do-able. It is done frequently and as far as immigration is concerned it is a non-issue as long as she can show means of support without working (like living with a boyfriend) and has proof of funds or an exit ticket.

I went to Japan and back and the US and back and got a 90 day stamp each time. They don't care I don't think, so I think she would be fine to do the same just go somewhere and come back and then keep doing that. I did my trips in a 4 month period. |

i wouldn't be so sure about immigration not catching on. after awhile they are likely to expect your gf might be working illegally. especially since immigration has been getting more strict these days.
i know a couple who tried this. eventually immigration questioned why she kept coming back when she wasn't working.
so i'd call immigration or an embassy to make sure. |
