If you are a 1st timer teaching in korea do they call your references and talk to them? This is for EPIK.

My references are two people that I still work with, and I'm positive that they would have told me if they rec'd an email or phone call from EPIK.

So in my case definitely no. It might be a rare thing?

normally i would expect people to call references but in the case of EPIK, I get the impression that the EPIK people in Korea will be hesitant to talk to my employers because that would mean speaking in English for 10 minutes or longer.

I kind of feel like this was a needless hoop for me to go after 2 of my previous employers when they probably won't even read the LOR or call them.

If they're Koreans...maybe. If not, definitely not.

E_athlete - Did you go directly through EPIK or through a recruiter?

I only ask because I went through a recruiter and I was only asked for one reference and wasn't sure why, unless the recruiter counts as the second reference.

EPIK but through a recruiter yes. You are required to give them a reference from an employer or some professor at school. I gave them 2 instead of one. But I kind of doubt they even check your references. Unless someone here that went through EPIK can tell us if any of them had their references contacted. Anyone?

EPIK dont usually call your references, that is; the letters you provided, but if your last employer/s were a Korean hagwon or a public school they are often phoning these to check up on your work history there I have heard.

I believe usually a recruiter does talk to your references.
Sounds pretty normal.

Both my references were called in the case of ESL Planet.

They call to make sure they don't hire someone lazy or incompetent...

But yes, make sure you tell your references they will be called.
