Men-only train cars sought in groping fears
Does groping happen in Korean Subways? I know there's lots of pushing and shoving for the busy subway stops, but what about groping? Will old creepy dudes actually feel up a ladies bum?
I haven't seen it yet, but I really haven't been looking.
Just curious. |

One Korean film...English title is Bystander. Set the scene in a crowded subway car with a creepy, visibly drunk old man groping a high school girl, when, from behind, he feels breath in his ear. Annoyed, he turns around to see an attractive woman. And now he's confused, but only for a second or so, because she takes a firm grip on his man parts and his left hand and they leave the train together, one willingly, one unwillingly. And that's the first we see of 신은경, who plays a police detective alongside 문성혁. 6월의 일기, 2005. |

Probably cause korean girls have no qualms socking a guy with their purse and calling them out on it in public. However, in private, it's a whole other matter. |

Seen it on the bus - nice looking lady with a seat free and the adjosshi literally pushed me out of the way to sit next to her.
The bus gets crowded and I hear this loud whiney moan..
Addddddddddddjossssssssshi - and a load of Korean and wagging the finger at him - she stands up but doesn't move away from him - he says something to her but she strarts shouting at him and we all start to look at the daft old *beep* - sat there like an absolute lemon! |

Are we living in a different nation? Sure, Korean girls are a little more assertive than, say, Japanese girls, but in three years I don't think I've seen anything like that happen. Having said that, the whole "creepy guy groping women on the subway" isn't as big of a problem here as it is in Japan.
I've only seen it (groping) happen maybe once or twice on the subway here. I did have a student tell me about a guy who was touching up on her... which was super classy, considering she was 15 or so when it happened. |

It would happen to me once a week, until about the time the subway advertising about public etiquette came out, then it kinda of slowed down.
Happened in an elevator yesterday though.
And for the record, I don't think I would have noticed the ass-touching and elbows in the chest so much (as pushing and touching in general is more liberal here) until my Korean husband pointed out when it happened, and from then on, I realized how often it actually happened.
And it's not groping per se, but unnecessary touching, and quite inappropriate nonetheless. |

Just understand the difference between fromage and frottage, or you're liable to look like an idiot on the witness stand.

I actually just seen the first instance of it just last week....after 9 years in Korea.
This old pervert, 70?, was pretending to try to get closer to the subway map to read it, but he was actually squeezing into the back of a 17-18 year old girl standing under the map. She immediately knew what was going on and moved quickly to the other side of the car. He kinda gave up and just sat near her, drooling over her legs. I gave him a good hard stare to try and let him know I saw what he was trying to do.....don't know if he got my message. |

I was once on the subway when I heard a scream - a guy who appeared to be in his late 20's/early 30's had just bitten a girl on her arm. Then he went to another pretty girl and did the same. And to another and another. The entire subway was terrified until, at the next stop when the doors opened, a halmoni sitting in the disabled seats got up and pushed him off. It was awesome. |

I sit in the elderly section in hopes that I get groped by an old lady. |

In my five years of living in Korea, I have had my butt squeezed maybe twice, while on the subway. We have had several girls come to school crying because of men trying to feel them up. |

Dokjeokdo, I don't know the correct spelling so I'll just call it the island. I was coming back from the island after Chuseok and fell asleep on the ferry. I felt something on my package and woke up with some drunken Korean man not just touching but fondling my goods. I was about to knock his clock off and some other Korea noticed what was happening and drug the fellow away. He looked pretty much like a vagrant so I'm not sure what he was doing. A bit later the same guy tried to bite a baby in the face when the father left. I got involved with that too and finally the crew made the fellow stay put in some other part of the ship which was a good move because their was about to be a man overboard.
Ok. And now off topic but also returning from the same island the following Chuseok I had another incident. This time involving some other foreigner I did not know. He got on the bus and for whatever reason decided he couldn't hold in his piss any more. He comes shoving and shouting through the crowded bus to the door where I am and pleads for the driver to open the door. The driver refuses. Next thing ya know I feel warmness on my foot. The guy soaked his shorts and piss was dripping all on me too. I swear my foot hasn't felt clean since that incident. |

Probably more so than you think. I guess it's just one of those things that's noticeable if you know what to look for. My gf (american) has had some problems here and there, amazingly a few times in my presence as well. She has Korean friends though who get grabbed pretty regularly. Apparently it's a little issue of face though for the girls to make a fuss about it. The girls can't call out the guys because they're older and it looks like she's trying to shame him.
Not that it excuses it, but from the other side of the coin it's acceptable for the men here to be a lot more.... assertive... shall we say. |
