what would you do if you had a wasp nest just above your front door?

I have already asked a few Koreans and they say there are no pest control companies in Korea

( on a side note: does anyone else think that advertisement for TEFL on the top of the page has a strange picture?)

I would ask a Korean who you can talk to and trust if there are any products you can buy to take care of said problem. If a wasp sting is anything comparable to Korean mosquito bite, your screwed!!

Grab a Louiseville Slugger and go to town!!

the wasps will move on.

When I've not had access to spray (back home), I've used a long hose and blew them apart (from a distance) and stayed away for awhile. But with the people everywhere here, someone's bound to get hurt.

Okay here's what you do (depending on the size and assuming it's a paperwasp nest)

At night time (they are inactive), spay the heck out of it with flyspray. Wait a few hours, place the nest in a plastic bag and shove it in your freezer overnight (this kills the eggs) then just throw it out in the rubbish.

Do not use fire.

If it is a hole in the wall type nest, then once again wait till night time and spray the heck out of it with flyspray. you will have to keep doing this till the eggs have all hatched.

If the nest is too big to do the above then you have to contact your building management. Big wasp nests can be dangerous.

A big pest control company in korea is called cesco, you see their ads on tv all of the time

Once again do not use fire

To reiterate what blackjack said above, some wasps in Korea, especially the larger ones, can be very dangerous. I believe they are the same variety as the so-called "killer wasps" in Japan. They are completely malevolent.

Also as blackjack mentioned, only do things at night, while they are dormant, and do not use fire. If you can find the company mentioned, let a professional do the job.

I agree with this sensible approach. If this doesn't work, mix a home brew of powder detergent (preferably Tide) and gasoline 50/50 mix, put into a balloon & set a slow fuse with a cigarette.

slather thermite all over the nest like peanut butter. Be careful though- this stuff burns hotter than the surface of the Sun. Your problems will be over mos tik. Little dab will do ya.

Now, I am not going to tell you guys what thermite is, or what you can do with it. Just do a Google search and you'll find tons of sites telling you a bunch of uses for it. I will however, tell you how to make the stuff.

Obtaining the Aluminum
1) Go to a machine shop. They will usually give you aluminum powder for sweeping the floor or something.
2) Break open an Etch-A-Sketch, the stuff inside is pure aluminum powder.
3) Go to a paint store, they usually have powdered aluminum that people use to mix into paints to give it pigment.
4) Get a grinder, and something made of aluminum. Good ideas are soda cans, bike frames, and lacrosse sticks. Start grinding the aluminum and collect the sparks in a container.
5) Search eBay, they sell it for pretty cheap.

Obtaining the Iron Oxide (Rust)
1) Take some steel wool then put it in a jar and then cover it wool with water. Use a magnet to make sure the steel wool doesnt float during the reaction process. Next, put in 5 tablespoons of regular bleach into the water and 5 tablespoons of regular vinager. Wait a day or so and then filter the brown paste with a coffee filter. Leave it out to dry overnight.
2) Go to a paint store, they usually have powdered iron oxide that people use to mix into paints to give it pigment.
3) Connect wires to a direct current (9-volt battery), strip both ends and put them into a saltwater solution. Let them sit for five minutes. One of them will start bubbling more than the other. This is the POSITIVE(+) wire. Put a nail tied to the positive wire into the jar. Now put the negative wire in the other end. Now let it sit overnight and in the morning scrape the rust off of the nail & repeat until you have a bunch of rust on the bottom of the glass. Let it dry out, and crush it into a powder.
4) Search eBay, they sell it for pretty cheap.

Mixing the Stuff
Thermite is 8 grams of iron oxide to 3 grams of aluminum. The formula is by weight but because aluminum is very light, it will appear to be approximately a 50-50 mix. Put them together in a container and mix them until it is an even mixture. If you want, mix four parts thermite with one part clay or Play-Doh and knead thoroughly for moldable thermite.

Igniting
Thermite needs a lot of heat to light, that means magnesium. Find some magnesium ribbon, or a sparkler that contains magnesium and put it into a pile of thermite. Light it with a torch, and run!

There is a company called CESCO in Korea. They deal with all kinds of insects and pests. There's a good chance they will get rid of wasps, too. They advertise on TV often.

Also, I've seen the wasp/bee killer spray around. The kind that shoots three meters. Maybe it was at Homeplus?

There are apparently 167 pest control companies in Korea.

If you need help, call the 120 service as that's what they are for, to give advice during stuff like this.

Back home, I would also wait until dark, & spray & burn the wasp nests, with a lit section of rolled up newspaper. They have no sense of direction after dark. But here, Koreans would probably think the crazy foreigner is trying to burn down the apartment, so I'd follow previous advice to freeze the nest in a plastic bag.

On a related note, how do foreign teachers cope with wasps in the classroom, buzzing around in front of them, & generally making a nuisance of themselves?

My first attempt to swat & kill them with a slipper, was met with gasps of disbelief & shock from the kids. Lately, I've been shooing them out the open window with a newspaper. Some of the students could be Buddhist, & thus any killing of any living thing, could be repugnant to them. Other ideas?

I'm due to start a PS job in Ilsan on the 25th. I'm from England and have a massive fear of wasps, I'm the type who flaps about and runs a mile when in site of one (maybe a slight exaggeration). By the sounds of it, English wasps are nothing compared to SK 'killer wasps'. Brilliant! Are they generally a nuisance and will I inevitably embarrass myself in a classroom full of them?!
