In the last week I have heard of 3 teachers having their apartments broken into in Daegu. Folks, if you live in a villa, LOCK YOUR WINDOWS, LOCK YOUR DOORS, and for god sakes put your money in the bank!
2 of the people I know lived either on the 2nd or 3rd floor. The scaled gas line pipes, opened the window and cleaned them out. It is easy to target teachers. They know when we work, they know we have some cash, they know we have toys (IPods/laptops etc).
I have lived here for over 6 years and in my time I have never heard of three apartments being broken into in just one week. I am not trying to scare you, I am just trying to warn you....especially here in Daegu it seems.
Lock up peeps.

the timing of this post is interesting to say the least - from time to time people post on here about being robbed; having lived in nyc, I am accustomed to locking up all the time.
I live in Haebongchon, near Itaewon, and we've been mentioned a few times as being a place that's known for robberies.
My apt has the typical grates on the windows and door. My door has multiple locks and there's a locked gate to our bldg.
yesterday I had the window open and was typing away on the computer when I heard a noise very close, got up and cracked the door a bit - a woman was just turning away from my door. Even tho she was K, w/o thinking about language I asked if I could help her - she replied in perfect E she had the wrong apt and seemed very nervous - she made like she was going to the door next to mine changed her mind then headed up the stairs, looked like she was looking for some other place and fled. I could see she had a key in her hand.
I seriously thought about going after her - it was extremely odd. How can you have a key and "be at the wrong place?"
I kept wondering if the noise I heard was her trying that key in my door.
I so wanted to call the police but knew that would not work - all tho back in the U.S. one would do that immediately.
it was all very disturbing because she looked like anything but a burglar, and maybe she was not, but I had my suspicions.
*another time at a sleep away winter camp, I had gone back to our dorm for something I left in my room and discovered 2 men (perhaps students at the univ?) simply going from room to room trying the doors, appearing to be looking for one that was unlocked.
that's another time when teachers get robbed and seeing as the season is almost upon us, keep an eye open folks.
by time you realize what's happened it's too late. |

40-minutes south of Daegu. Burgled about 6-weeks ago. Lost my laptop and my digital camera. Two other apartments in my block were also hit. |

Just don't touch the thief when you come home and catch him in your house. If you hurt him you'll have to pay blood money (and he'll be sure to inflate the injury claims).
Nice-uh. |

It's also summer, so most people without aircon, are going to have as many windows & doors open, as possible. Remember to close & lock them each day on the way out.
How safe is it to leave a spare key with the apartment manager, on the first floor? At the moment I only have one key, but really should get a 2nd key cut for an emergency. (Lost, broken or left at school). |

My boss has a key to my place. Always has. I had him cut it for himself when I got here. Safe as anywhere else. |

How can you have a key and "be at the wrong place?" |
A few years ago, I was living in a large apartment building, the kind with identical wallpaper and carpet in all the halls. I usually didn't do the deadlock when I was home. Fresh out of the shower with nothing on and heading to the bedroom my door suddenly opens. I wasn't in view of the door but I could hear someone come about a step or two in and then suddenly turn and say something like "oops" and she was gone. I threw something on and stuck my head out the door. It was a girl who lived above me. She must have hit the wrong button and not been paying attention. About 2 months later, I was listening to music or something and I didn't hit the button. Her roommate was on the elevator and I didn't notice I got off one floor too high. as I was walking to the door with my key out I heard "I think you got the wrong floor" behind me.
If you're not paying attention in that kind of building, its pretty easy. But around here.. I wouldn't see it in most places.. |

this isn't an apt bldg like you are describing - it's a large house with a gated courtyard and apts built into the structure.
there are only 2 basement apts, I have one; one has to walk down across a patio to the stairs to come here -
whatever she was doing here, it certainly wasn't a mistake, so in that regards, my suspicions are well-grounded. whatever she was up to wasn't legit.
there was a gypo woman who used to live next door to me - I couldn't help but wonder if the key this woman had was the old key to that apt - don't know if our locks were changed upon moving in or not.
in the meanwhile, you really should lock your door. |
