If I am going to be starting a contract in mid august and I just saw a different school that I would like to work at their camp from mid july to mid august, how do I line this up with my visa?

Do I need to get both immigration numbers and both visas before I leave the US?

Or can I use the same immigration number/same visa for both contracts?

One of them ends on August 22nd, and the other starts on August 23rd, how would I work this out?

It would be two different visas, two different immigration numbers.

Because they are two different companies.

If it was the same employer one could suffice.

But you need to speak to the consulate as doing things that are out of the ordinary are not their strong suit.

If the consulate rejects it, you may need to get a 2nd passport and apply at another consulate with one visa in each one.

Or make a visa run to Japan between job #1 and job #2.

Make sure your contract for #2 covers it and the day or two it'll take to get there and back.

Ok, it sounds like it's not worth the extra hassle, but I'll think about it. Thank you for all the information!

Check it out with your consulate. They may surprise you and have a protocol to fit your circumstances. It never hurts to ask.
