i was watching korean news last night and i could tell they were reporting on some kind of new television show. there were young pretty korean girls lined up and they were showing pictures of them, etc, there was a host, but i couldn't understand. so i ask my boyfriend, what's the show about?? well the winner of this new show wins the free plastic surgery of her choice! i said, is it a joke?? he said, no, it's for real. wow.
i found it sad because these young girls were already quite pretty and really had no need for surgery. but i suppose this new show is controversial, even by korean standards because it seemed to be causing a stir on the news. kind of reminded me of "who wants to marry a millionaire" or "the bachelor".

a question -- do you think a show like "the bachelor" would be a hit in korea? i was thinking that it would because many young korean women's prime goal is to land a rich husband (of course, not all korean women share this goal). what do you think?

There is already a show like that in the US. It's called Emtreme Makeover. Sort of a reality TV show and the winners get all the plastic surgery they want.

The difference, of course, is most of the contestants on the show are ugly.

They've already had a show where a "civilian" got to choose which famous Koreana actor/singer/talent she went out on a date with. I remember the girl chose one of the guys from Shinhwa. Nice choice! Embarassed The part of the date they showed involved him going to her place while her mom ostensibly chaperoned in the adjoining room and they made mandu together and ate it. It was cute.
I didn't see this show personally, but a friend of mine told me there was another show where celebrities were in this dating Survivor type thing where they all tried to get someone to fall in love with them, and some were voted off and absolutely devastated. I mean, they are celebrities, the dates should come so easy for them.

If you want free plastic surgery, just let me know: I know a plastic surgeon in Tongyoung who'll trade professional services with ESLers for his sons benefit. Seriously. Even in a small coastal community there's a couple of plastic surgeons making oodles of money, with more work than they say they can handle. Or so one of them told me as he bought me dinner in an attempt to woo me into doing privates. "I don't need to look like Brad Pitt, keep your liposuction thank you, and I already look enough like John Cusack." But it gets you thinking... How childlike do Korean women want to look like for twentysomethings to seek out Botox injections? It's sad.

Oh, I definitely think a show like the Bachelor would do well in Korea, because most Korean women are obsessed with marriage, period. One year I went to a Women's Day festival for the Church of Christ at the Shilla Hotel and a lady spoke about God and how marriage should not be the most important thing in a woman's life...then they had a wedding dress fashion show.hahaha Laughing

Well, right now looking child-like is in style. It is THE thing to have a 12 year old boy's body right now. Also, I have heard that men are predisposed to light colored hair or long hair and blue eyes because they are a symbol of youth. I guess that is why Koreans are wearing blue contacts and dyeing their hair blonde/red these days.

I'm going to have to disagree with that.

Actually, research has shown predisposition is pretty much limited to a hips/breasts/lips thing. Hips and breasts being linked to fertility probability, and lips visually showcase arrousal. (a woman's [and man's?] lips become more red when arroused, which lead to the use of lipstick in society starting way back with the Egyptians). Eye and hair colour have never been demonstrated as being prevelant in dating decisions across nearly all cultures. While to many it is nice, it's never been linked to being any more relevant than what kind of shoes a person wears or what kind of jacket they have on.

Pro-tip sweetheart - Most girls everywhere dye their hair. It's just more obvious here as most Koreans naturally have black hair. I've even had a girlfriend with coloured contacts no less, and one of my employees used to have customized contacts with patterns.

Very true. If you already look like John Cusack, why try to look like Brad Pitt? LOL
Of course you know, there's a big difference in hearing "you look like..." someone famous here, and "you look like..." someone famous back home. Wink
